I don't know why I bid (and won) these 2 rugs, seller claimed they were from the 70's, with "some damage to the fringe" on one...the first one is nearly perfect, cotton foundation, clean, no real wear or damage. The other (nearly identical) looks to have been improperly washed, colors faded and silk fringe almost all cut off...size 5'2"x3'. Any opinions...age, origin, replace fringe or just bind and not waste $ repairing because of the faded damage.

Both are Tabriz, pretty good quality. My guess for the age would be more mid 80`s due to colors. Repairing depends on if you can use the rugs. If you have no need for them, don`t spend money because you will not get it back in a sale. If you would like to keep them, it is worth having the one with damaged fringe fixed. We had a post about washing a few days ago (luster wash). The look of the faded rug makes me think it was washed this way. The damage of the fringe looks a lot like it happens after such a wash.

Thanks KAD, it is a shame that a 'washing' process can do so much damage...I thought the 'luster wash' was to make it shinny, if I had taken a rug in and it came back like this, I would have cried! No wonder the guy wanted to sell them. "If you have no need for them, don`t spend money because you will not get it back in a sale."...you are correct, I have no need for them, I was hoping I could 'rehome' one of them, but the one is just too ugly for anyone. I will post pictures later of my attempts on a repair!!

You are right, the wash is to get shine to the wool. But the chemicals used in this process are quite harmful to silk. They bleach the color pigments in wool, but don`t damage them too much. So this wash is ok with wool on wool or wool on cotton. Also if you have silk highlights like in most 50 raj Tabriz it is ok. But rugs silk on silk or wool on silk should not be washed this way. Many dealers don`t care about this since most customers buy the luster.
