I found this rug framed in a gallery. The seller claimed that it is silk from Turkish.
What fascinate me about this rug is the metal threads that are used to highlight the figure
in the middle. I asked for a burn test and the seller pulled out a knot and burned it. It did smell like
burnt hair.

Can anyone help me identify it? Is it worth more than the asking price of $2200?

It is a chinese reproductiion of a turkish Hereke rug. I was to say the pile seems to be art silk, but if you made the burn test and it smelled like hair, it is most likely natural silk, but not of high qualtiy. The metal treads are not gold, they are just gold colored. All together it looks more valuable than it is. Could you supply exacxt size of thhe rug?

This is a tapestry. The workmanship is not very good. For the material if you say the yarn has no smell like burn hairs. Probably it is cotton or mercerized cotton. Spun silk is also claimed by some carpet dealers. Spun silk is spun from the broken cocoons or silk waste. If it is pure spun silk when burning it is the same with pure silk. You can check the piles if the piles are made of the yarns which are like very thin ropes (threads). It is very possible is cotton or spun silk. Pure silk yarn is not spun and it consists of many single silk fibers directly reeled from the cocoons but not spun. Pure silk fiber is very shining and strong. Even you rub the surface hardly there is no floss taking off. We made finest pure silk rugs in China so I understand the quality very well. That design was popular 15 years ago in our hometown. But it just was popular for 2 years. We called golden thread carpet. Most that kind rug was sold to Turkish dealers. Now even a few pieces left. 2200USD is higher for that rug. If you really have interest in that workmanship I can offer you real silk made but much cheaper than that price.
