What actually is a Luster Wash? On the follow page it's described as a tea wash:

But in the cleaning appraisal section it is described as:

"Luster Wash - this is given to augment the luster of your rug. A previously dull and flat carpet can have this wash for a vibrant silk like shine!"

So what is actually involved different from a shampoo?

Ok, let`s get back to serious. The differnece between a wash with herbs or tea and luster wash is the following:

The first two washing methods are adding color pigments to the fiber - like if you spill tea or coffee on a white shirt. The color pigments of the liquid cover the fiber and so it gets a different color.

A luster wash is a lot more specific. It coats the fiber with chemicals to soften the wool and add shine. This is totally different from a shampoo wash. Number one washing facility for brown and antique wash is Kiskan process in Hamburg, Germany. Also a great washing company is Knecht AG in switzerland. If you google them both you will get a better information on their websites.

One dealer who has a lot of washed rugs online is doris leslie blau. If you look at the color of most of the rugs, you can see they have been heavily bleached and antique washed. And they have the luster.

We do rug deep beating/dusting, shampooing, chemical treatment (which is still basically cleaning) and extraction, hand cleaning and small repairs... but I've never known a way to add back natural "luster".

I've never seen "luster" products.

Perhaps it's just a term we don't use, the cleaning page has an option for shampoo on its own, we'd never simply shampoo a rug, it doesn't properly clean it. It just confuses me this "luster wash" description, unless there's some product out there I've never heard of.

So basically is a "luster wash" these other chemicals?

On a personal note I think tea washing or herbal washing should be avoided by all but the specialists in it - and even then it's not something I like unless to tone down an extremely bright and garish rug.

Also, if a luster wash has nothing to do with tea washing it should really be taken out the title and heading of the page...

KAD,

Kiskan process in Hamburg doing good work on woolen carpets, but they do not know how to wash silk carpets. They spoiled my 2 large Hereke and one Qum.

You also wash carpets? What price do you have?

Bukhara, I know what you mean about silk. Damaged fringes and colors because of the chemicals. We had to re fringe some 70 raj Tabriz we had at Kiskan after wash, the silk fringes where totally defect.

I am no great fan of antique wash or chemical wash at all, but some rugs are not sellable unless washed. We had great sucess with Bidjar, Bakhtiar, Tabriz on Cotton, Ghom kurk and tribal rugs. Also turkish Hereke wool rugs come out great. For my taste I like rugs the way they naturally are. Customers taste is often totally different.

Prices are very expensive, up to 42 Euro m² for takeing the color out of painted american Sarouks.

KAD, does Doris Leslie Blau use luster wash also on their real antique rugs (as in 1910 and earlier)? That would be a crime in my view. (They do have an awful lot of colorless shiny rugs ... .)

Shereen, you gave the answer yourself - I have no idea who does their washing, but do you think "an awful lot of colorless shiny rugs ... " faded in the sunlight? They found a way of prepairing rugs to the customers taste. And yes, in my view a lot of real antique rugs seem to be washed (at least what is visible on their website).

The change of color is so extreme in some cases that it is almost unreal.
