It is an antique south persian rug, Khamse conferderation or Gashgay Kashkuli. Nice rug.

Wondering if this rug might be worth getting appraised and if so, can anyone recommend someone? Thanks

It depends it you want it appraised for insurance purposes or just for yourself. RugRag.com can do appraisals, but if you want an insurance company to accept it you will need to have a local person look at it (or ship it off to someone). I called around in my town and found someone who'd do one for $75...he inspected it, photographed it and wrote up a paper I can fax to my insurance company (of course have to pay extra to have it insured, as rugs are considered 'fine art' and my insurance company said the rug had to be hung for them to insure it).

The Oriental Rug Retailers Association has a Certified Appraiser program that requires a lot of knowledge and testing.
The current list is at
http://www.orrainc.com/F...Oriental_Rug_Appraisers
( I see a couple in NC)
I would personally trust these appraisers above many without this or similar certifications......not because of my knowledge (which is very minor) but because of what they go thru get this designation. ... very thorough, very impressive.

You can contact local dealer. I am sure they will help you to get appraised. Good luck.

I agree that this rug appears to be a Southwest Persian tribal rug, woven either by a member of the QashQa'i or Khamseh group.
