I just purchased a nice rug from a private seller who claims his mother bought it in 1997 from a large Persian rug store in Wisconsin for $8000. He says it should be 100% silk but is not sure.

It's 9x12 and was difficult to take complete pictures of the whole rug, but I tried to include both edges of the rug in different pictures.

After placing the rug in my home, I am also confused of what type of Persian rug this is, and if it is silk or wool. I have tried the "burn" test and it did smell like burning hair, but im not sure how that identifies it clearly.
Please if anyone can tell me what region/type of rug this is, estimated value, and if it is silk or wool?
I really appreciate your help!

Looks like wool on cotton, fairly fine weave and very good condition.
The experts here will be able to tell you where it was likely made.

until seeing how the fringe was finished it appeared to be pakistani. now i say persian. I agree with shereen, wool pile, cotton foundation. Nice rug. What did you pay?

Thank you RugPro, I paid $900, my husband thinks it's too much, im trying to prove him wrong :)

I had another question, I did the burn test on a piece from the fringe, and it smelled almost like plastic, very different from the rug fibers, is that how cotton from these types of rugs burns?

cotton should smell like burned paper. I cant see anything but cotton and wool in the photos there. I do not know the exact current market for this specific type of rug is, but if it's pretty clean, there are no damaged areas, you absolutely got a bargain without a doubt.

Cotton is a plant fiber. When ignited it burns with a steady flame and smells like burning leaves. The ash left is easily crumbled.
Silk is a protein fiber and usually burns readily ,not necessarily with a steady flame, and smells like burning hair. The ash is easily crumbled.

Thank you once again! I'll have to burn some paper to see what it smells like, it's possible that is what it was.
I really wish I had found this website before I purchased a couple of other rugs that I know now I might have payed too much for. I'll have to create a new post for that!
Again I appreciate all your help, I feel much better about this rug now, I was thinking of re-selling it, but then again I just might keep this one :)

Great Forum!

Definitely a wool on cotton rug, hard to tell from the pictures, sometimes there are white highlights done in silk but a lot of the time it's not really silk and is cotton which if there are highlights in this rug I would presume would be the case. Again from the pictures and resolution of the pictures it's hard to tell whether it's Iranian or Pakistani

Regardless it's a nice rug, quite fine, looks to be good condition and clean... at $900 you got an absolute bargain, buying new in the UK you would be talking around £4000, more if it's Persian.

If I saw this rug for $900, I would buy it, without a doubt. You made an excellent purchase.

thank you all for the reassurance! I dont think there are any silk highlights, it looks uniform through out
I'll try to attach closer pictures of the details, will that help to identify this type of rug?
Thank you :)
