Hi guys, I'm new on the forum, and pretty new to buying rugs. I am in the Army. I purchased some low quality Persian rugs when I was deployed to Iraq. Now I am in Afghanistan and I want to buy some finer Persian rugs. This is one of three posts I have. Please tell me what you think. I mostly want to make sure that I am getting a good price for the rugs I buy, and I'm not getting lied to about the origin or quality of the rugs. I am a Sergeant so I don't make a whole lot of money over here. I don't want to waste any of it, and would like to be able to make my money back if not a small profit if I need to sell them. Thanks for your input.

I was told this rug is Nain. It is wool decorated with silk on cotton. It is new and in excellent condition. It is 4x6. The seller is asking $680 USD. I couldn't remember all the angles I was supposed to take pictures from. I can take more pictures if I missed something important. There are a few different shops on my base. They all have hundreds of rugs.

Currently, there is an embargo on Iranian made rugs. You cannot bring them into the US regardless of where you purchased them and you may have them confiscated at customs (although, I'm not quite sure of how customs works with the Army, so perhaps you'd be okay). All of the rugs that you posted are priced fairly, but not low enough that if you had to sell quickly and in a bind, that you'd make money. I would skip the Nains entirely as they look to me to be Tabbas Nains which are lower in quality and aren't the best sellers. The Isfahan is pretty, but you could probably get something quite similar in the states for maybe just 15-20% more in price with a good return policy and without risking the customs confiscation. I hope the information is helpful. Thank you for your service.

Thanks, this is exactly the input that I was looking for. The prices I mentioned were the sellers asking prices. If I can negotiate a good enough price I think they may be worth it. As for customs, I think I could get almost anything through. They aren't very particular, especially at the post office. I'll check it out before I make any purchases. If I think I'll have trouble with customs then I'll just stick with some Afghan rugs. Not really for value, but just to take something home with me.

I would also appreciate any additional input if you have it. Thanks.

Afghanistan produces some really nice rugs, and in general, they are quite good for heavy traffic. If possible, try and get an Afghani rug that is made of wool on a cotton base (a lot of Afghani rugs are made with wool on a wool base). By base, I mean the foundation of the rug, or the warp and weft threads, those which the knots are knotted onto. The fringe is an extension of the foundation, and if the fringe is wool, that means the base is wool.

Rugs with wool foundations are prone to buckling when washed or when in a humid climate. A rug with a cotton base will save you some headache!
