Hi guys, I'm new on the forum, and pretty new to buying rugs. I am in the Army. I purchased some low quality Persian rugs when I was deployed to Iraq. Now I am in Afghanistan and I want to buy some finer Persian rugs. This is one of three posts I have. Please tell me what you think. I mostly want to make sure that I am getting a good price for the rugs I buy, and I'm not getting lied to about the origin or quality of the rugs. I am a Sergeant so I don't make a whole lot of money over here. I don't want to waste any of it, and would like to be able to make my money back if not a small profit if I need to sell them. Thanks for your input.

I was told this rug is an Isfahan. It is wool decorated with silk on cotton. It is new and in excellent condition. It is 4x6. I forget how much the seller is asking, but I think it is over $1,000 USD. I couldn't remember all the angles I was supposed to take pictures from. I can take more pictures if I missed something important. There are a few different shops on my base. They all have hundreds of rugs.

The full rug. Sorry I couldn't get higher to take a better picture.

This is the bottom.

This is the side.

And here is the back.

I went back to purchase a cheep Afghan rug to use while I am living here. I looked at this rug again too. It is actually wool on a silk frame. The seller is asking $1700. I know I could talk him down some but I don't know how much. Can anyone tell me what I could expect to pay for this rug in the States?

The retail price in Europe is about 2.000,- Euro. The Ebay price for used good Isfahan is about 600,- Euro. What about the embargo of Iranian rugs?

I agree with Chris about the embargo.

This is a bad comparison, but ask what the rug underneath this one is going to cost out of curiosity. It's a 10x13 or so sized ardekan/meshed/low grade kashan. Here in the states in mild used condition it can be had in the vicinity of $1,000 to $1500. If showing some uneven wear, $400. Foundation showing, $200.
