Recently purchased a 30-year old Kashan with virtually no wear. Pile was thick and rich. But the rug needed to be washed. We sent it to a person that specializes in hand washing. Just picked up the rug and the pile is laid flat, stiff and hard. Have yet to contact the rug washer. Searched on-line and the advice is to gently brush and/or vacuum.

IS it normal for the pile to be flat and stiff and if so how do you return it to its pre-wash condition?

Leviu,

It obviously depends on how bad it is. Try giving it a vacuum (with the brush head - I know this isn't normally recommended but it's too bad to be done occasionally), sometimes crystallising shampoo is used which means it continues to clean until it's been vacuumed a few times.

Others might be able to give more advice.

For a wool rug it is not normal to be stiff after wash. Silk often is stiff after wash, and it will get soft after a while. Sometimes rugs are pressed to remove water from it, so it might come from the pressing. Try vacuum against pile direction. But it sounds like no handwash with water. After handwash rug should be soft and not stiff.

Did the rug have any dog or cat urine/smell in the rug prior to cleaning? Sometimes when a rug has pet damage and it is cleaned, but not soaked, then the rug is stiff after a standard cleaning. That might be another possibility. Not sure what part of MD you're in, but we're in Kensington and would be happy to help.
