Can anyone place this vintage Persian with condition issues? Any opinions on whether it is worth repairing?

Thanks!

Looks to be a 1960s Iranian rug from the city of Tabriz. The damage looks as though it is not cost effective to repair in this country. That being said, however, it has been priced to compensate for the damage, so I think it is worth what they are asking if the damage is isolated to that area. This rug might look great in your home if you place the furnishings in such a way so that no one sees that damage.

Thanks for the feedback! Very helpful. Could you provide a ballpark estimate for repair, versus what the rug would be worth in good condition? I realize there aren't that many pictures to go by on CL. Thanks again.

i agree with jahann, and to reiterate, there really is no cost effective traditional repair for a rug like this in the sense of a reweave unfortunately. even if for sentimental purposes with very deep pockets. This is just for what can be seen from low grade images, let alone dry rot, splits, odor, or anything else which is not seen. If you don't mind patches, so long as a donor rug could be found that could work as a much lower cost option, but still probably costly.

Depending on the weave (we'd need a picture of the back to tell), a rug like this would be $2K-$4 in good condition. Repairs would cost more than that in this country due to the cost of labor. What could be done is to have the edges with the holes cut off and then bound. To give you an idea of costs, we charge $12/linear foot for hand binding in our area. Still, though, when you factor in all of the edges and cost, you may not end up with an end product worth all of that because you'd essentially have a cosmetically nice, but condition-wise damaged rug (like a pitcher without the handle that is now used as a vase). You could patch the rug, but still, you'd need to put a sofa over the patches because they won't look great.

Thanks for the detailed info on the repair process. Very helpful. I think in this case, a few well-placed pieces of furniture could make this a usable and attractive rug!

Here's another downside to the embargo - that rug could have been sent to Iran for repair but you wouldn't be able to do that now. It would still cost a bit but shouldn't be much more than $1k - may not be worth it unless it was already yours and had sentimental value.
