My wife and I are contemplating the purchase of what we are told is a Kashan Persian rug. It's 12x16 and it is in very good condition. I do not see any wear marks or stains of any kind. We were told it was handmade but I have my doubts. I think it is Indian with a persian pattern, but of course I am not sure. I must say that I really don't trust the info given to us by this dealer who does not have a storefront in our town (santa barbara).

Please, if anyone could give me their opinion on the rug and what it would be worth I'd greatly appreciate it.

Condition looks ok from the pictures. It is not a Kashan. It is handknotted in Iran, it is a real persian rug. It was made in the city of Mashad or made in Kashmar using Mashed design. Both is possible. Design looks more like Mashad, knots look more like Kashmar. Both cities are close together and are located in the east persian district Chorassan. Rug is not a high end production from this area, it is rather lower quality (this does not mean it is a bad rug, it is just not so fine!)
If the seller is not asking too much, it is a good rug to beginn with. If the seller is iranian, he must know what I wrote to describe the rug. Then he is trying to sell the rug under wrong label since Kashan rugs are usually more expensive, and you should confront him with what I wrote. If seller is not Iranian, it might be a mistake and seller does not know better.

Many thanks for your opinion. I'm pretty sure that the dealer has taken it from another shop and is reselling it with a markup. He's asking $8500 for it. I have no idea whether this is a good or bad price.

I used the given information on the rugrag calculator.
You may take a look at the calcualtion at

I would also see the selling price at somewhere between 3500 and 4000 US$, if the rug has no major defects or problems.
