Hi All,

This carpet is 12' x 18'. It appears to be hand knotted with many inconsistencies.

Can anyone speculate on its origins and/or value?

Thanks,

Jay

I can't tell you where it was made, but our experts here will.

The design is the traditional Turkoman Tekke main carpet (or main tent carpet) design, including main guls, secondary guls, sunburst main border (used since c.1880), minor borders, knotted elems. It seems to be wool on cotton, but I'm not entirely sure from the photos (traditional Turkomans are wool on wool). Colours seem at least partially synthetic, and rug is not antique or old.

Older and antique Tekke would have six to eight colors, yours has only four, I believe, pink, red, navy, white.

Thanks Shereen!

The rug was acquired at auction over 40 years ago and was not new at the time.

I will attach a few close-ups of the back, but please tell me if any other specific images would be helpful.

Thanks again,

Jay

Those photos will help the experts here (I'm not an expert, just a rug lover).
Can you tell whether the fringe is wool or cotton?
By old I mean 60-100 years, by antique 100+.

Fringe feels like it is cotton. Good call!

Thanks Bukhara.

Do you have any estimate of age or value?

Looks a lot like some pieces I've seen made by a North Khourisan cooperative.

I spent a lot of time talking to these individuals several years ago, at the Kish Carpet exhibition.

Mashhad is actually a collection point - not a point of origin. The rugs that pass through Mashhad could originate in Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and many more places (Uzbekistan, for example).

I have a modern piece that was most likely made in Pakistan, as well as an older piece (70-80 yrs old) that is Ersari.

Mashhad is a great place to look for rugs!

Unfortunately - politics being what they are - I won't be visiting any time soon.

It is a pretty good quality rug made in Pakistan. It was made in the early 1960`s so when it was purchsed it was quite new. When this rug was made the producers used a lot better wool than what is used lately, so it seems to be in a quite good condition. Typical are the cotton fringes and the kelim border.
Bukhara designed rugs from north eastern Iran or the surrounding countires are mostly made on a wool foundation, but some Belutch are made on cotton with turkman design, but these rugs usually are no larger than 7 x 5 ft.
Due to the size it seems to be a typical production for the US market, since most other countries have a far larger demand for smaller sizes.

Thanks for the information! How much would you sell it for?

These used rugs usually sell on ebay or craiglist, rarely in stores. If you would buy a new one it would be around US$ 10 - 12 per squarefoot. Used depends on condition. If it is real good, 4 - 5 US$ per squarefoot.
