Just an interesting little piece I have.
Not being able to read the language, I have asked 2 different native Arabic speakers to translate the signature and got 2 very different responses.
Well, each agree on the name but one says the other line is a year (Islamic calendar) another says it is not even Arabic (or Turkish) so therein is the mystery.
Let me just say that the seller claims the rug to be
yep, you guessed it, 40 years old. The date (if it is a date) supposedly suggests the 1940s so maybe a little older but......

This is a Sofra (soofra?) from Turkey.

Any thoughts?

Note that I have it only because I thought it an interesting little piece....no particular profit motive, and even though I have had it for a little over a year, I still haven't decided how/where to show it. Probably on a wall but who knows.... ;)

Interestingly, the word sofre (transliteration) is the word for eating mat placed on the floor around which people will sit to take a meal together. I have sat at beautiful heirloom sofre, and at long sheets of thin white plastic, also called sofre. I have one I bought from the Afghani man that has ten inch braids of fringe at either end.

Yep, the dining table. And (apparently) spelling it with an e is a Turkish variant.

Really nice looking piece. I couldn't tell you much about it, but great colors and design. Does look a little older than 40 years old to me, but I'm just not familiar enough with these rugs to say for sure
