Hello.
I have just listed a very rare Pictorial Persian Tabriz rug with Hebrew writing on ebay.
As I am a novice, any information you can give me about this rug will be sincerely appreciated.
I finally listed it on ebay as I have been trying to upload images onto this post for the last 3 weeks(!!) and the only way was to have a link to a web address.
I have been told that it is a Tabriz,it has a silk foundation and is wool with silk highlights. It is approx. 48 in x 37 in.

If you need any further photos I will be more than happy to add them.
Thanks for your time.

I saw a rug exactly like this on ebay awhile back (it was in CA, USA), I bid on it (but not enough), thought it was interesting, but no idea what the writting says.

Hi Fredgrower.
Actually, I'm the one that bought it.
I recognized it immediately as extremely rare and valuable since I have been researching Persian rugs that have Judaica influences for some time.
I've since had it translated and it contains portions from the old testament and of Jewish prayer.

It has some tiny stains on it unfortunately and when I took it to be cleaned, the cleaner who is also an appraiser gave me some unofficial info about it.

He told me it is a historical rarity, very high quality and that I should donate it to the Jewish Museum.
(I'm waiting till he returns from overseas so he can clean it.)
If anyone has any ideas about possible places to sell it besides ebay, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks.

Nice rug. Counting 17 x 17 knots per inch makes 289 kpsi or 440.000 knots per m². So it is a rather medium weave, less than 50 raj. Jewish design tableaus are not very common, but Tabriz makes some of them as well as christian motives. So calling it a historical rarity is a bit too much - the appraiser might not have specific experience in pectoral rugs. Also it is rather new - probably made within the last 5 to 15 years. Possible a rug collector who badly wants it for its collection may go a little higher in price, but average retail value for a rug this qualtiy would hardly extend 1300 - 1600 USD. The stains should be no big problem. Ebay is probably the best way to sell it since you get a lot of viewers. Also offering it at a price at AUS$ 6000 with giving the buyer the chance to make an offer is fair - you will see what the market will bring. Donating it to a museum is also a good idea.

KAD has some good info, but I would say it is a bit older than 5-15 years. 6k is very high asking price, but this is the game on ebay.
