Hi,
I've just bought a berber rug from a market in Marrakech which needs cleaning. I didnt notice at the time but now that I've brought it home it smells. I've tried running warm shower water over it and the water turns a light pink. Would it ok if I put it in the washing machine using the cold gentle wool cycle with some shampoo on it? I've heard we should not use normal detergent. Was told its made of wool and its about 1 x 1.5m.
Thanks.

Hi, I would not put it in the washing machine. Handwash (bathtub works well) in cool water with mild shampoo or Woolite, rinse well, roll in towels (make sure they are old towels in case the dyes bleeds on them) to remove the excess water, then hang to dry. I've just about destroyed a nice wool blanket by putting in the machine/dryer, wool shrinks when exposed to heat. Or take it to a professional for cleaning. Here is my 'rug drying rack', pvc hung from chains, easy to take up/down, towels under to catch the drips.

Hi, I recommend to take to a pro. The problem about the moroccon rugs is that they have too much lanoline in the wool that was not washed out before dying - this is what makes them smell like sheep. Exposed to water a lot of color will run on these rugs, they need to be washed with a soure ph rug shampoo and constant rinse of water, your professional rug washing company will know what to do. Washing machine is not working well.
