This seems pretty out there. Am I off in thinking the pictorals on this thing, the cityscapes, look really touristy? This thing looks tacky and belongs on the wrong side of Fifth Avenue. $36,000.???

The first one is absolutely beautiful - I'm such a sucker for that light blue accent and close up of the medallion. I haven't taken a look at the second one yet.

The second carpet is somewhat of a simplified version of a rug which resides in the Carpet Museum in Tehran. I really can't understand why this carpet is so expensive. At retail, figure something like this at most should be in the $5000 range. Plus, the seller counted the knots wrong. It is not 300 KPSI, it's counted 13x13 which is 169.

A simplified version. The look of the images and the architecture looks naive and very contemporary. The thing that wold bother me about that is its, I would think, potential for really dating the piece. Nobody wants to be stuck with an Orbit Gas Station.

Wow, no refunds, no returns, one photo, a single feedback, and poor item description. Jeez, I wish there were a way to get alerts for these kinds of auctions so I could slip a bid in. hmmm

And here is something. This guy had at least 200 auctions all ending at the exact same minute, earlier, and still quite a few still to end. All well over $1000.

The first one is a really cool looking sampler piece. The second one I like the unusual colors of the rug. These Nichols rugs were always very bright for the most part, although the price is pretty steep for a 3x5.

This is pretty cool. Although the $19K is a bit off my pocket.

Nice looking rug, although it doesn't have quite the punch that a lot of these rugs of this era had. It's always good to see them as intact as this one is. I think I saw one area which appeared to have repair, and just a small bit of foundation showing. Certainly is probably around 100 years old, and the price tag is a heavy hit. But I think it would be safe to say that's pretty much indicitive of the market for these rugs. For this vintage carpet, I prefer the richer colors, a little less rust. I actually like rust in carpets, but for some reason, it almost always reminds me of a log cabin in the adirondacks. If red is substituted I think the rug has a much greater flexibility in terms of placement regarding a "theme". Otherwise, I can't imagine a rug like this going anywhere but a Great Room, or Living room. Possibly a library, although I would say my favorite for a library would have to be the classic Bokhara design...

And look at this from Takrugs. Shame on them. The main isting says "wool" but even to the naked eye in the small photo it's obviously machine made poly and the larger descriptions says machine made and poly propylene.

If it's a manchester wool, it very well could be. Although sometimes what I've actually seen sellers do is photograph rugs when they're wet. I'm not saying that's the case with this carpet, but it very well could be. This rug I would guess to be something like 80 years old

I'm looking at a lot of stuff tonight. It's interesting to see the flow of similar stuff among all the regular sellers, and I don't mean just from the 5 guys in VA. I am pleased that I can spot without fail the machine made stuff instantly from even the small pictures. It's just a quality of the way the pmage lays on the surface, the colors, and that "spray" or what almost looks like air brushed quality. It jusy really jumps out. And the other thing is that most of the ones that jump out at me and make me salivate, are at the high starting bid category. I guess I'm learning something from all of these hours on there. I am noticing more with the one chopped end. Any reason for that trend?

the one chopped end is usually due to wear. What often happens is that the carpet wears at the ends and sides first.

Every so often you'll see the sides of rugs shortened too, but it's more usual at the ends because of neglect to act quickly and make preventative measures to keep it from continuing to unravel, especially if not corrected prior to a cleaning. This can be fixed and or prevented by overcasting.

The reason ends are more susceptible is because if you lose a weft, automatically you're exposing an entire row of knots to be lost. Also more importantly, and perhaps most common is that ebay rug sellers may intentionally remove some rows of knots at the end to give the rug a cleaner look. This may be done because of previous damage due to moth, water stain, whatever.

It's sometimes less obvious, and certainly less expensive to remove rows of knots than to make repairs. Even some of the best rugs that have these shorter ends, which sometimes may be considered a sign of neglect on the owner's behalf, however, it's quite apparent that these cheaper goods often feature the shortened ends more often because repairs are less warranted due to low replacement costs.

I can't describe it all that well, but I hope this helps
