It's beautiful. You must have had fun with this when you were growing up. Is it unusual to see so many men on a rug? So many of the animals have their mates, but the men are not similarly paired.

I think the person on the podest is Imam Reza, the 8th Imam in the Shia Islam. He was a direct descendant of Mohammed. Ali ibn Musa ar-Rida (arabic ???? ?? ???? ???????; persian pronounciation Re?a; * 1. Januar 766 in Medina; † 26. Mai 818 in Tus. He is often pictured with animals. Many poeple belive the was able to talk to animals, and they would understand him. In catholic christianaty there is a equal holy man: Franciscus de Assis. Imam Reza is a popular figure in iranian and oriental art. His shrine in Mashad is the most important place of pilgrimage in Iran.
Here is another rug that pictures him. You can see animal theme on this rug also.

KAD the rug you posted, made from a painting by Artist MAHMOUD FARSHCHIAN, now I'm not familiar with this artist, but know you too have a rug in your collection of one of his paintings, too. Question: are a lot of rugs made of his art? Is this one too? http://rover.ebay.com/ro...&mtid=824&kw=lg

(sorry to get side-tracked off original topic, but wondered about this ebay rug in relation to yours when I first saw it)

I thought the guy with the blue hand in the original topic had something to do with the Hindu deity Krishna (who is often depicted as having blue skin)...just his hand is blue, maybe this isn't him but someone who is teaching his ways. Probably wrong, but just my guess.

Fredgrower, it is a rug made from a painting of Farshchian. It is made in 50 raj, there are quite a lot of these rugs on the iranian domestic market, and some came to the US market. The price is quite good for a rug this size including the frame. The problem on these "lower" knotcounts is that the faces don`t come out fine and look not so good.

I thought it was the same style art, the photos of the rug are not great either, so I really couldn't see the image that well. I like the style of his art, nice colors and beautiful details.
