It is more Mehraban or Lilian from 1920-40. And maybe worth $200. Only my opinion.

It looks like a "painted" Lilihan from the 1920/1930s. It looks like one end is complete and the other end nearly so. I would say $10 a square foot for a 1930s painted Lilihan in low pile condition or about $300 for a rug this size. It has a very nice open design, so if no foundation is showing and if it is of medium pile length, you could go up to $15 a square foot. If you like the rug and intend to keep it, you will need to have it washed professionally and the ends secured.

PS. If you go to see it, feel it for thickness. If it is thin and floppy it isn't a Sarouk.

Chris got the right area, it is a Mehrawan rug, single weft, knotting looks like Lilian, that is why it is often mistaken for Lilian. Beautiful rug, but rather poor condition. Shirazi defect, missing areas, one end strongly damaged, foundation showing on various areas. I would spent max. 200 $, and take a few hundret more to have it professionally repaired, since it is a real beautiful design.

...thanks for the responses...yes, beautiful, but as you are all saying, they're asking a little too much. i'll perhaps shoot them a low offer and see what they say. yes, i do think it's beautiful though...

thanks again!

KAD,
What is a Shirazi defect? I don't think I've heard of that.

Shirazi is a German meaning of selvages (the endings of the long sides of the rug).

First pic is the backside of an antinque Lilihan, the second from a 1940 Mehraban.
