The seller claims that it is Tabriz rug from Iran. I will post the images that I have, and update once I get more detailed images.
The information provided by the seller:
Size: 3.5 x 2.5
KPSI: 18x18
Pile: Woll with silk.
Foundation: n/a

The wrap seems to be multi colored.

Is this really a tabrize rug, or could this be a Chinese rug?

Hello Ben.
The backside looks to me like a 50Raj Iranian Tabriz. Where are the silk highlights? Maybe in the halo.
The multicolored frings are curious. Is it golden silk?

There are some silk (or silk looking) highlights on the border. The wrap is golden silk, and also cream colored.

Well I have not seen the rug yet. I was kind of curious about the multi (cream, yellow, pink, other colors, etc) colored wrap, The seller is asking $300, and I think it is too high for this rug.

The colors look bright in the photos, but I think it is just in the photo, and may not be that bright. The seller told me that she baught it 15 years ago as a used rug.
Don't you think it is over priced?

No, i do not think its overpriced. This is the price you have to pay in a rug store. And the rug looks in quite good condition. But i would not spend more than 100,- $. This design is not very popular.

"translating" what Chris says: if you really love it, and want it for your enjoyment, and pay 300 USD for it, you most probably haven't been duped. (Although it's always worth trying to negotiate a lower price, of course.) On the other hand, if you plan to resell it for 300 USD within the next 50 years, you're unlikely to succeed. (After that, you just may, one never knows the antique market that far in advance.)

I like the rug - it is very nice. I think the rug is absolutely not overpriced. It is on silk warp, has a quite fine weave around 50 raj, and a very intersting design. Beauty is always in the eye of the viewer, and everybody has a different taste about colors. Tabriz pictoral rugs usually have stronger colors. This rug has the colors that where requested in the time it was made - late 1970 - early 1980. I like the color setup, and the design. The traveller lost in the desert getting hope from god? This is the question. Muslims do not have a picture of Allah - so it is not Allah on the rug. So it might be Mohammed who is giving hope to the lost traveller. To his right side the Holy Coran, on his lefft side the dove, the sign of peace. If I would buy it for $ 300, I would say I have made a good deal.

It could also be Christian iconography, from the Old Testament. There are pictorial rugs with Christian and with Jewish motives that were woven in Iran.

Shereen is right, I have a few rugs with christian design in my shop:

http://www.artoriental.d...2479-qum-silk-5-x-34-ft

http://www.artoriental.d...2478-qum-silk-5-x-34-ft

What made me think it is not christian is the Holy Coran on the upper left side of the rug. It is typical in design, and I would not think a Muslim would mistake the Holy Coran with the Holy Bible. But this is just my guess.

Yes, the depiction of the black stone in Mecca on the cover of a copy of the bible would be a little odd, I agree. I hadn't really looked close enough. Islamic iconography it is. Thanks KAD.

I did see the rug today. It does have very fine KILIM on both ends of the rug. Is this normal for persian Tabriz rugs?
