I've been looking at some Oushak rugs here in Iraq. I've bought one and now looking at another, larger one. The price seems steep, 4300 for a 13.5 x 9.5, but I've having trouble finding a whole lot of information on good prices on new rugs. Does anyone know a good source for information on Oushaks? Is this not an entirely popular type of rug? Shopping here in Iraq, I don't think I'm going to get a really good deal on a rug, but if I find the one I love, I'll probably get it as long as I know I'm not taking it in the shorts. Thanks for all your help.

There is no way saying anything useful without having photos of the rug. (Or at least the reliable description of various specific features by a rug expert, alternatively.)

Oushaks are originally Turkish rugs. For some reason, they have become "fashionable" and cheap versions of them are knotted in various other places, including Pakistan, India and Iran. There are machine-made and hand-knotted versions, and very crudely woven contemporary ones, and relatively finely woven ones. The value varies enormously with these factors.

looks like peshawar or chobi, not oushak

Yes, RugPro is right, it seems to be a Pakistan. Design is Ushak or Ziegler...what ever the seller tells a tale. What about duty by shipping to the USA? This kind of rug you have to buy online. With conversion right. Google for Ziegler rug/carpet, ask for Pakistan made Ziegler.

I am afraid that piece is chobi. If you really want to understand the difference between chobi and real ushak lift the ushak and chobi. You will see that real turkish one will be much heavier and color look little bit fresh bright unless old wash. You should also look at the fringes if you see bright heavy wool, that is Turkish, If they used brawn color and very light wool this is Afghan or Pakistan. Real Turkish ushak is not cheap. good luck

OK, doing a little more research with this info in mind, is this necessarily a bad thing that it is chobi? Those still seem like pretty nice rugs and in the ball park on prices. I do know that this rug at 13.5 x 9.5 weighs about 80-85 lbs, because I know it can't go US Mail. What is the giveaway that this rug is not ushak? This all being said, I am not in love with this particular rug, but there are some others that I'm looking at. Thanks for all the help, I've got so much to learn.

It is a good thing that it is a Chobi. This quality is within the best you can find with this design in new rugs.
Traditionalrugrepair tried to explain that there is a different between old/antique Uhaks and new woven Pak rugs. But you are not looking for an antique rug.

Hey, thanks again. So I decided to pass on this rug, outside my price range. Here are a couple more I am looking at. The large green is 6X9 and he is saying is a new ushak as well, and then the smaller one is 3X5 and he is saying is cashmir. I think I can get them for around 1400 and 500 respectively. What do you all think of these rugs?

so how can you easily tell that the first rug I showed was a chobi or peshwar vs. a ushak? I tried to do some research, but many peshwars I saw had ushak designs. Man, I've got a ton of stuff to learn.

I can tell you that you should buy what you like. Because it is very difficult to learn everything in a short time. I spend 20 years in repairing and selling rugs. I can't tell you that I am an expert. It has a lot to learn. So don't try to be an expert in a months. But you can learn minimums so you can choose something decent. Good luck.

Those are some nice rugs, Shereen. I'm a little partial to the bottom one, myself. I think I'm done rug buying for now, at least until we build our new house in the next 5 years or so. Until then, I'll be trying to learn a little more about them! Thanks, all!
