The price is ok for the size. Picture 3 left buttom: The border selvedge is probably defekt, might be a sign of moth damage. Would request larger detail image.

I don't know anything about 1940s Kashans, but I note that the seller says 150 KPSI whereas the tape measure suggests more something like 100-110. Also, a lot of nonsense in the description, but I guess that's irrelevant.

Thanks Shereen, I noticed that too, about the knot count.
Agree with your comment on the ad, but different strokes ....
Thank you!

Thanks KAD, I queried about the fringe and seller assured me both fringes are perfect, one of them has just got part of the fringe doubled under.
This rug is above my budget but I like the blue. By the way, I am enjoying the Emmett Eiland site you posted http://www.internetrugs.com/ but cannot open any of the mhtml links. I wrote to the store, and webmaster, for information but didn't get a reply as yet.

Sorry, yes, you're talking about the selvage not the fringe. You're right, I noticed that.
I guess one of the first things I need to do, as a buyer, is follow up my observations with direct questions to the seller.
I think I tend to notice defects but then somehow am too polite to raise the issue. I guess I'll have to work on that behavior.
Thank you!

If the rug is in good condition and the pile is even and thick, then the asking price is fair for a Kashan of that size, even one of this weave. I believe it is mislabeled, though. This rug is more like circa 1970s than 1940s. That mustardy-yellow-gold color is indicative of the '70s.

That is GREAT to know about the mustardy color, which I had been thinking of as ochre. It's actually not my favorite color, nor is the olive in the 1970s Ardakan I'm in the process of returning.

The description on most ebay offered rugs is not correct. Jahann`s date is correct, my guess would be even younger (1980`s - 90`s). And - again - it is no real Kashan. Most cheaper rugs in this design are Ardekan or Meshed. This is visible in the wool quality and the weave.
If is very ok if a rug used for at least 20 years shows signs of wear, but these lower price qualities wear faster and often have no moth protection, so the risk of getting a rug with "meat" is quite high. I recommend to have any rug you purchased washed and newly moth protected.

Dear KAD, thank you. I'm thinking now, if I do buy a Kashan style carpet for this particular room, I may buy one new from rugman.com, which will work out cheaper perhaps than buying older and washing. Do you recommend moth protection for new rugs also? Is moth protection something a buyer should routinely ask a seller about? Any rug I buy will be on the floor in a room that's used, so I'm hoping moths won't be a major issue. But, as you have pointed this out, I will educate myself on moth protection options and costs also. Thank you! I'm still trying to look at the new Sultanabad rugs on Emmett Eiland's site but am having no luck with opening their non-Mac friendly mhtml files.

I would recommend asking about moth protection to any buyer of handmade rugs made of wool. It is a major problem many used rugs have. Buying rugs on ebay or auction may save you some money rather than buying in a reputated shop, but there is always the risk to bring in moths to your home that are a danger to any woolen product.
Reputated shops usually have their stuff well mentained - this means old rugs that often come in as a trade in are professionally washed and moth protected. This is protecting their investment (rugs) because the damage by moth in a high quality inventory would become a expensive problem.
It is also ok to buy an used Kashan in good condition, washed and with new moth protection. When you go around shopping ask the sellers to show you good Kashan rugs, no Ardakan or Meshed quality.
