I am currently in the Middle East and shopping in Doha for a rug or two. I have looked at several merchants and know basically that I want a beige rug about 2x3m and another smaller one that I am still trying to pin down.

In the latest shop, I found these two rugs. The first is a Nain, wool on cotton with silk highlights, which the salesman said was of lower quality for Nain (he showed me the higher quality pieces as well, but this rug is going under a dining room table so he advised to go for a lesser piece). This is basically what I am looking for. Unfortunately, I don't have the kpsi, but it isn't terribly high. It is 2x3m and the asking price is the equivalent of $1040. Is that a fair deal as far as anyone can tell from these pictures? Also, it's new. I should be able to go back and get some additional pictures, but I won't be able to do that until Monday at the earliest.

The second one is much smaller and is obviously a tribal piece, claimed to be about 30 years old. It is wool on cotton -- there were other wool on wool pieces, but I don't think this was one of them (could be mistaken, I looked at numerous). This one is 1.95x1.40m, and the quoted price is $1236, though with both of these prices I should be able to haggle lower. He did give me the tribe name with this one, but I don't recall what it was (it's not Qashqa'i, though). No overtly visible damage, and the fringes and the sides looked in good condition. There is some wear in the pile but nothing exceptional.

Any thoughts on these two rugs? Any questions I need to ask, details I need to look for? I will try to get additional photos next week, but I am limited by my work schedule.

If you view two topics down Nain/Isfahan?, KAD has a great summary of Nain rugs. It is always a good sign that a dealer tells you the quality is low. However, that can also be a salesman tool to gain credibility, and then charge you for a high quality rug. The price is high. If you go to ebay you will find ample lower quality Nain rugs with limited silk highlights for a very low price. Therefore, I would suggest you look at ebay for some sense of value realizing that asking price is not always selling price.

The Nain is good looking design from a distance, but you can tell that the curves are not smooth but very broken. This is a sign the thread count is low.

And by the way, I am not one of the experts, but wanted to bring your attention to the post of an expert. Others might give you more clarity on value. If the price is high on the Nain, you might also assume the same on the tribal.

On the tribal 30 years of age does not give it greater value. In rug years a true antique is 100 years old

I think you can bargain and buy nain around $800. I generally do not recommend ebay because of many scam dealers in ebay. Tribal carpet is nice but nothing really spacial. It is a shiraz carpet form Iran. I say $600 is high end price for that piece. I think dealer want to make some money with tribal. Nain looked good to me. I think the quality is OK. Not the best but for dinning room table it is more then OK. As long as you do not mind to carry you can buy in Qatar. There will be story to tell your friend that you bought it in Qatar. Good luck.

The Nain on ebay is a great rug, the price is good. Even the buy it now price is fine for this quality. But it is to small for under the table. I think the 3 x 2 is also to small (narrow). You should try to get a 3 x 2,5 m minimum size for a regular dining table, otherwise the legs of your chairs will leave the rugs surface when getting seated. The price of ca. 1040 USD is fair, but the dealer can go down a bit - traditionalrugrepair has posted a price around 800 USD. which is pretty much at the lower end for a rug that size. The rug prices have been rising in Iran quite a lot in the last year, and the rug posted is not lowest quality. The tribal rug is a typical Afshari rug from the area east of Shiraz, it is quite pretty, seems to be in good condition, and has nice colors. I would say price in Doha should not extend 600 USD. So if you offer 1200 USD for both, and meet the seller at 1400 - 1600 USD, it would be ok.

Thanks to everyone for posting, and I am exceptionally glad that I found this forum before buying anything. I still have several weeks to shop so I can make adjustments to my choices, though I'm fairly set on the Nain (I won't tell the salesman that, however). We are limited by the size of our dining room, and our dining room set isn't that large so the size may actually work for us. I will have my wife re-measure the area though just to be sure.

Afshari, that's what the salesman said. I am in awe of your rug knowledge, KAD. ;) I may not wind up with that rug, though, because of the size, and I'll be looking at some other tribal pieces next week. There are a couple more stores that I want to visit before I make any purchase. I somewhat pride myself on being a smart shopper, and I don't want to be taken by these crafty rug salesmen.

I will tell people about this forum -- it's a great resource!

The Nain on eBay didn't sell, now priced at $250 (buy it now) a great deal, if anyone is interested (I can't as I've hit my limit). http://rover.ebay.com/ro...9&mtid=824&kw=lg
