I purchased an "antique" (70-75 yrs old) wool on cotton Kayseri in Istabanul last weekend (12-14 MAR), and the merchant characterized the rug's significant variances in design and shades of the "same" color as "amberge, auberge, or aberge". He used the term to describe the piece's distinctive, unique and last character? Anyone know what the term is and if he was accurate or just BS'ing me ? :-) Thx

Are you sure he didn't say "abrash"? This is a term that refers to variation in shade in Tribal and Village rugs that are due to the dying process done in small batches of wool, and sometimes of different batches of (handspun) wool taking on colour differently, since the wool has a different absorption factor.

Thanks for response Shereen. (I used to live in Killingworth, Ledyard and Stratford, CT during my military career). Possibly, and the way you refer the term is pretty close to the merchant's...but it sound like he ended the word with a "g"...and I asked him a couple of times to repeat it and define it...

I agree with Shereen - if he mentioned variations in colours - this is called "abrash" (Written Abras in Turkish). What is strange though is that Kayseri rugs don't have a strong Abrash (colour variations) like Nomad or "Tribal" rugs because Kayseri rugs use few colours and some natural wool (direct colour of the sheep).
Can you upload any picture?
For example (and I really don't want to Advertise here) - check this Kayseri rug - and let me know if yours look similar:

Hi glisuni.

Looking to your pictures, I definitely think that the rug dealer mention "Abrash" to explain these colour differences. This is a Kayseri rug that would be around 40-60 years old in my view.
Also from your second picture, the dark red part looks like being repaired. This may not be a recent reparation - maybe done 10 years ago. But it would explain the colour difference and why that part looks in better condition than the rest.
From your wider picture (3rd one), I think (but cannot see in detail) there is a another section (a thiner section/strip on the left side of the picture) that has been repaired.
I hope this helps :) Let me know if you have other questions.

Colour variance as a result of repair is not usually called abrash, so your seller may not have been entirely honest.
The last picture suggests that some rows were unravelled, or fringe-knots undone, presumably for a more even appearance. (I think this is often done with older rugs and not a problem, as long as it doesn't cut into the pattern.)

Agreed. Or they may have pronounced it differently

What is the size of the carpet? Kayseri rugs tend to be priced per square meter (or square foot). A good Kayseri rug would be around $150 per square meter.
