The last tribal/non-tribal brought alot to discuss. so I thought I would put up another. I previously purchased this from an Iranian family from Tehran. They stated they were more interested in city rugs (Kashan) rather than village rugs Therefore they had little information about this rug.

They stated this rug came from their grandmother, who had spent her whole life in Iran. They believed it to be about 70 years old.

Im my limited experenced I had never seen a Turkoman with this many motifs in a open space, if indeed it is a Turkoman.

The middle area is actually a very light green, and there is color run it is simply pile that I did not straighten first.

I think its more 1970 than 70 years old. Should be a north-east Khorassan Baluch or something else with Baluch influence. A refuge piece?

No, at least not what they stated. The family are long time Iranian and the son came to the US 20 years ago. Since I bought this rug he is trying to talk me into another kashan rug.

Chris is right about the age. It is maximum 1960 - 75. It is a rug made by turkoman tribesmen in northern Iran in the area between the caspian sea (Gorgan) and Meshed. Typical is the border, unusual is color and the inner field - it has Baluchi infuence as Chris already posted. Interesting piece for its type.

The border nearest to the lens reminds me of some Ersari themes. I think it was made with some traditional elements - but made for sale.

If you look at the main field --- the design doesn't feel traditional - although I could be very wrong about that.

The sunburst main border and the elem border (border closest to the lense) reflect late 19th to mid 20th century tekke main carpet main border and (knotted) elem ends. The proportion of the borders to the field and the loose and coarse weave plus the mix of tribal elements suggest second half 20th century to me.

I realize this is a 1970-80 rug I still didn't know if it would be helpful to take a picture of the top and bottom and some other fringe, selvage pictures

I think the warp is machine spun wool (it's very narrow and uniform - like spaghetti).

The weft is likely a good clue has me wondering - but I haven't seen enough pieces to be an expert at this.

The weft in your photo looks a little like a piece that I bought that I know for certain was made in Afghanistan.

Zanjan (or Zenjan) is a northwest province of Iran. It produces many beautiful tribal rugs, by nomadic Persian tribes in such districts as Kelardasht, and Sauj Bulagh (modern Mahabad). Zanjan means ideal wife. The colors of these rugs are usually very bright and lively.. That is my idea only.. But I'm not really sure.. :biggrin:
