Its different from the Hereke's I've seen before, but my experience with rugs wouldn't fill a thimble. I'll wait for the experts.

Thanks, I thought the chinese rugs only had barrel knots on the fringe, is there any books that can teach identifying rugs, or does it just take years of working in a rug shop?

It is better to see whole carpet before say sure but I think this is real Hereke. I am almost positive that this is Hereke from Turkey. Silk looks Turkish silk to me from the pictures. But again It is better to see whole carpet. Turkish silk is a little bit doll in the beginning but it does not change over the years. Chinese silk looks very shiny in the beginning but less than 10 years it will look like nylon.

It is not possible to learn about this in a book. You need to look at many silkrugs to learn the minimal differences in the look of the rug. We are specialized in finest silk rugs, and work with chinese, iranian and turkish producers. Otherwise I would not be quite sure about it. It is always a problem to tell from a picture, but from what I see it is 100% China. My tip would be Zhenping - best producer in Hereke Silk reproductuions from China. The disign is a Ozipek style, that Zhenping produced in a double knot quality. They are so good, most dealers will not see the difference. Compared to the Chinese Hereke Silk rugs you usually find in US, there is a at least double price for Zhenping double knot quality. As I said, the rugs are made in such perfection, it looks 100% like original.

Traditionalrugrepair is right about the usual wear of chinese silk. But we have sold Zhenping Silk for more than 20 years. We never had any problems, since the material is grade A+. You can use it for years, have it washed (real professional only!) and it will look like new.

Thanks all! I have learned a lot. It is frustrating having a desire for beautiful rugs, but lack the knowledge. Years ago I bought my first 2 silk rugs from a dealer in CA, they were 'art silk', but sold as real silk (no wonder they were 75% off). It hurts getting burned and a lot of people prey on the naive.

I know it is hard with Herekes, since the replications are more than 95% from what is sold. The problem is, that most customers would like to have an original, but are not willing to pay the price the original costs. So it is very attractive to get a "good deal" with 75% off. Buying in Turkey is not guarantee to buy a turkish Hereke - please read http://www.internetrugs..../chinese-oriental-rugs/ and http://www.internetrugs....-buying-rugs-in-turkey/ about chinese imports to Turkey. And most dealers in USA have no expirience with real Herekes, so how can they tell the difference?

The signature has such a low density, I can barely read it ---- therefore, I'd conclude that it's not a Hereke.
