This 11'9"X8'5" was purchased from a local shop. They know nothing about it, and neither do I. I won't even add any comments since I'm usually wrong. The weave does seem fine. I had it on hold for several hours today, an finally buy it and I am probably crazy for even waiting. I have bought too many rugs and I need to say no, but not today.

One picture show a 50 cent piece moth damage and there are "specks of damage" at both ends. However, there is no indication of any damage on the back.

The kilim is missing from a portion of the rug, and the one end has quarter to half inch of carpet goine. I washed one small corner and the wool has a very nice sheen with the green becoming a half shade lighter. The dye, to this point, is very solid and my venture hit each color.

The pile seems consistenly low with no foundation seen except for moth damage. The one close up is the worst pile I could find.
However, I do a lousy job of visual inspection and will have to go more indept. The more I am around the rug, the happier I am I got it. Now I just have to clean it. Since it is so big I might try doing a section at a time.

My house floors, walls and closests are full of rug. I sell enough to keep my habit going, and put up a new one I like nore than the old one.

I had a choice, in this case to buy a large very fine Kashon in very good condition that looks like 50 other rugs on ebay. Therefore I went for the characterof the old rug. Damage is in the eye of the beholder if it is over weighed by character.

A nice old rug you found. It is an ca. 1950 Hosseinabad. This village is located between the better known cities of Nahavand and Malayer in the western persian Hamadan distrct. Due to the single weft construction it will be no big deal to get it fixed since the damage is not dramatic. The sheen is typical since rug at that time where made with high quality highland wool from the nearby mountains. If you would spend some money in a professional wash and repair, it will become a real beauty. It is a very original and typical rug, not so fine, but with a lot of soul. It seems to have partly natural dyes.

Thanks to both of you. The question: is if the rug iworth restoring since I can still return it. Could I find another better condition 1960 Hosseinabad for $860 ($360 purchase plust $200 cleanng plus repairs)? Your figure for repairs might be more or less than $300. I was hoping it was older 40ish. It is 9X13.
Since the lighting wasn't good this evening I took pictures of all the bad spots that I could see rather than the full rug.

I agree with KAD. You carpet has moth problem. Basically It was eaten by moths. Generally when you have a moth problem restoration can be expensive because of unpredictable condition. If you want to repair your carpet you are looking at around $1000 You should return the carpet. Unless you want to invest some money.
