Hi There!
I found this posting on craigslist and just wondering is this an authentic Persian rug or not? If yes, is it worth $495?

Thanks,

The rug on craiglist is a persian Tabriz, the quality is a 20 or 25 raj, it is made in Iran. Raj is the number of knots in a row of ca. 7 cm (this is different in some areas, but for tabriz you use 7 cm). Considering that "fine" rugs in Tabriz start at 50 raj, you can tell it is a low price quality. But still these rugs are nice with their bright color and quite lasting in everydays use. I agree with bukhara, the Tabriz on craiglist can not be called a similar piece with the rug on ebay. For me it seems to be ok from the pics, and the price is fair for 6 m², if it has no defects or stains (dog, cat). The heriz on ebay is a wreck, the price is a joke. The description is not correct, it is not a 1900 -1930 rug, it is maximum 1960-70. It is of low quality, the rug has massive moth damage, and as you can see on the pics, there is still a great population of moth worms in the rug. If you buy this rug, you will get a lot of fresh "meat" along with it. They will spread all over your house and attack everything made of wool. It is very unresponsible to sell a contaminated rug like this to a customer.

This is a good price. Yes this carpet is not the best quality you can find, but the price is right. If you find this carpet in oriental carpet store. You have to pay much more. The most important question that you have to ask yourself is "Do you like the carpet ? Do you want to see this carpet rest of your life?" If the answer is YES , nothing to worry. Buy it enjoy the carpet rest of your life. Good luck

Thank you very much to all of your for your valuable suggestions. Yesterday I bought this rug and after bringing it home I have noticed that in one place(approximately 2 inches length) selvages are missing. Is it a major defect to degrade this rug value?

no big deal. Use it and enjoy it. If you have a big needle and wool thread, you may want to replicate the selvege to prevent fraying but should be ok.
