I am considering purchasing my first Oriental rug and want to make sure I am paying a fair price for a rug that will retain its resale value. Here are the specs they have given me: Peshawar, 100 kpsi, oushak pattern, afgani wool, vegetable dye. Can anyone advise me on this? I have pictures but have no idea how to get them on this post? Any help with this? Thanks!
***The tag on the rug says it is a wool Chobi from India, but the rug seller told me that the origin listed on the tag is incorrect. Also, it is 9X11.7

No doubt, this is a very nice Chobi Ziegler with good wool quality. What price?

The tag says $5500, but when I asked about it the dealer immediately told me he would knock about 25% off and sell it to me for $4000. (The immediate 'discount' has made me wary....)

Ok.
If you buy a Ziegler like this in Germany (i come from) for a price of 2.900,- Euro, thats what 4.000,- USD are, you can say it was a good shot.

Thanks. I've been told that purchasing a rug usually involves some negotiating, but I do not want to offend the seller. Do you find this to be true? Also, would this particular rug retain its resale value?

Kristen, we sell these rugs all the time. They are all the rage right now, and something like this would go for between $1700-$2500 in our shop, depending on the weave. These antique reproductions are very hot at the moment, but in terms of quality and construction, they are not as good as some of the more traditional, Iranian pieces that you can buy at the same price point. While these rugs have been holding their value for the past few years, the value of this type of rug is really at the mercy of the designer markets right now. I think for long term, it may not be the best investment.

Thanks for your reply, Jahannandsons. Very helpful. When you say 'antique reproduction' are you referring to the coloring (I am really, really new at this)?

My opinion is you pay just 25% more than would be a good price.

Thanks for your reply, bukhara. I'll take all the input I can get! But, I'm confused by your response....25% more than what?

I think he's saying $3000 would be a good price.

But you might want to talk to Jahann and Sons if he's saying he can get a similar rug for $1700-2500. Even with shipping it could save you some money.

Thanks, jesco. I have been looking for comps online today and there are so many inconsistencies in price--I am so frustrated. It seems like such a convoluted process.

Price differences for rugs of this type are generally because of the tightness weave of the rugs or the country of origin. It may also be because of the color or pattern, or in some cases the brand (there are many designers out there producing this kind of rug). The price for these rugs can also be all over the place because they are available at upscale designer boutiques, through your decorator, at a department store, online, or at a brick and mortar rug shop. The overhead costs at these places varies greatly.

When I say 'antique reproduction,' I am referring to the color, style, etc. These rugs are made to look like turn of the century Oushak, Tabriz, Mahal and other rugs. The originals in good condition are about ten times the price of the reproductions. Perhaps not the best first rug purchase :) If you want the look, though, you can't beat the reproductions, as they very often hit the nail on the head when trying to capture the feel of those older rugs.

this looks like nice piece. color is great. wool looks healthy, and it doesn't appear to be like a lot of junk that's out there

It looks like a good quality one so around $4000 would be a fairly good price.
