I am being offered this new Gabbeh from a reputable dealer. The rug is marked "Persian Looms" and indicates that it was woven by the Lori Tribe. The price is $4,500. Is this the deal that I think it is? My wife and I love the rug. I hope the pictures are good enough to review the rug. Thanks. Mike

This rug seems somewhat wide for a true tribal rug. It is also amazingly regular for a tribal rug. The selvages suggest Shirazi (but I imagine anyone can wrap red-and-blue around the edges of a rug?).

Is it on wool or on cotton foundation?

The website of the dealer "R. H. Ballard Art" mentions "Persian Looms":

"R. H. Ballard Art, Rug & Home offers only hand- made rugs. Our antique rug selection includes Caucasian, Persian Heriz and Ferahan Sarouk, and Turkish Oushaks.
New rugs include one of a kind Persian Lori Gabbehs and program rugs from such suppliers as Persian Looms, Safavieh, Kalaty and Rugs by Robinson."

Does anyone here know what program rugs are?

Perhaps "Persian Looms" is the supplier of those "one of a kind Persian Lori Gabbeh"? I guess the last sentence of the quote is ambiguous.

this is a nice piece. program rugs are rugs that are made with the same design and colors, but in multiple sizes and stock in each size.

It is a wool foundation and reputed to be all vegetable and" hand carded and spun" I think the phrase is. He had several "Persian Loom" rugs and said that they are made in the home for export. I did see the R.H.Ballard ste and their samples. I am sort of driven to find out more. This insurance loss and subsequent research and purchase of a new rug has really got my interest. Mike

The rug is pretty. If it's all natural dye and handspun wool, and you both love it, and it fits the space it's meant to go in, and you can afford it ...

In my experience, when I have bought a rug I fell in love with, I have never regretted it, whether it was a little overpriced or a total bargain. It's the ongoing pleasure it gives that counts in the end.

Some expert here on the forum may be able to tell you if it's grossly overpriced - I'm not knowledgeable about contemporary Gabbeh prices.
