Hi,
Needed a large rug and purchased this 10'6"W x 14'1"L rug at an auction for $1,200 + auction fee.
Carpet designer friend says it's old and valuable. Really?
My amateur research deducts that it may be an american sarouk possibly early 20th century?

Front and backside colors are younger than from a Saruk early 20th ct. I guess it is a 1940 Saruk/Mahal.

I would say chris has it. although on age I would go on 1940-1960's mahal or sarouk, but not a high grade one. The colors don't have the same feel as some of the earlier sarouk types. Looks like it has a little moth damage. Its not worth much different than paid. If it were an ebay rug, this is probably just about what someone would sell it for if not just a little more.

thanks for your ideas on what this rug could be.
colors are always deceptive on a computer screen, but the background striation is definitely atleast 3 shades of red/salmon/rose. the border background striation is dark blue, lighter blue and greenish browns.
the field ornament has greens, golds, browns, blues, creams.
what colors are earlier sarouk/mahal types? what constitutes a high grade one?
we're currently using the rug as it is in good condition and perfect size but i would sell as my wife is not thrilled with the color or design.
thanks again for your thoughts.

The look of the wool would appear more refined for a less commercial/higher grade carpets. The colors would generally be more saturated/richer and with a bit more contrast between tones as well, especially for earlier pieces. These are all loose indications.
