I have been looking for a replacement for a stolen Heriz. I like some of the Gabbehs, particularily those with a design in them and a border as opposed to a solid color. Some dealers say that their finer Gabbehs are Kashcoli (various spellings). I go into another shop and they say Kashcoli's are a different tribe and make smaller and finer knoted rugs and show me a 5x3 in a pretty traditional design. Am I missing something? Are the different spellings important? Also, are the tribes a part of the Qashqa'i tribe or federation of tribes? I am reasding some books and am astounded at the number and variety of these rugs. Thanks Mike

Kashkoli are often described as a subtribe of the Qashqai.
Both Quashgai and Kashkoli (Quashgai) traditionally produce different kinds of rugs. Kilims (flatweave), "normal" piled rugs and gabbeh rugs. Gabbeh were originally made to sleep on, hence their simplicity and the long (or longer) pile. It could be that the second shop showed you a Kashkoli rug that was not a Gabbeh.

Kashkoli is more expensive than normal Gabbeh. So be careful, because the seller can show you the normal Gabbeh for high price and call it Kashkoli
