I have posted some very average or even poor rugs. The reason I have done this is an attempt to learn about older rugs, and what makes the difference between the average and "interesting" rug. I would assume that many of the readers come to this site for the same reason.

A few days ago when I posted an average Turkomen Chris mentioned that design, color and selvage could be clues to age. I have had this mat for some time, but since the selvage look new and condition I didn't think much of it. I then realized it had been recast. Therefore, I don't know if this is an "interesting rug or not.

It is 37"x36"

Obviously it has issues.

Sorry for the pictures. I didn't have sufficient lighting this morning

Thanks

The overcasting doesn't look new and your pictures aren't up to your usual high standards
but it looks like a late 19th century turn or the century.

it is interesting. one not so perfect way to tell if a rug has been restored on the edges is to check and see how close the quality of wool used is the same as the pile, and to see if the exact same, identical color appears elsewhere in the weaving. That's if you don't know what the typical selvage finish for the piece would look like, but usually all these factors come together to make an educated guess. I cannot tell from the images as they're a bit blurred, but it does look like an interesting piece. I agree with ed that it's old but maybe early 1st quarter 20th too

Thanks for the early comments. New and improved pictures are in place of the bad pictures. The lighting was sufficient this morning and I apologize

Some kind of rug you may post to turkotek.com.
Looks like a Tekke with Chemche Gul. An old one.

That looks like a pretty ordinary rug to me, if your going to post anything over at turkotek
you should post that runner. I think that Balouch was nicer than this rug too.

Hi Ed.
The way to learn about old and antique rugs is to speak with a group of collectors who know everything about a type of rugs.
I told btuma to post it to Turkotek because of that. Questions like symmetric or asymetric open left or right, one or double weft, design and orign. There are more ordinary rugs on this forum like this one.

Thanks for all your comments. This has been a helpful learning process for me. Bokhara thank you, that is what turkotek also said, and I agree it is not a "whoa" rug, The only item they noted of interest was the changing of colors at one end is unusual
The best learning experience I got is to ask others when you don't know. I got this rug at a garage sale thinking it was old and the ends were different. I got it home, didn't ask anyone or research it, and put it in the closet thinking it was nothing. I actually put it in a garage sale fo $35 myself. Then a couple of days again, I started to look at pictures and it seemed to have markings of an old tekke.

However, if there wasn't a site like this to ask I won't have the slightest idea if it was just my imagination, just junk or an "interesting rug"

Morale of the story is ignorance is very easy thing in rugs and it is neccessary to rely on those that know.

Thanks for all of your expertise.

Chris the only thing I meant was that the Shah-sevan runner would have been a good choice for
a rug to ask about at Turko tek. I'd be interested to see what they say about it and why the expert
at Christie's said it might get $3,000 or something like that. The Tekke rug is just to new for them.
