The e-bay rug from faresalesman arrived.

It was described as 'perfect condition medium even pile throughout'. But it has *very* uneven shearing, up to 15 welts from left to right, with diffence in pile height from 1/16 to 3/8 inch sometimes within 2 inches from each other.

Pointing this out to the seller, I got this response:

"These rugs are village woven and even the sheering is done by hand with a large scisor rather then a sheering machine and its small things that makes them much more valuable then a workshop woven bijar. These rugs are sold at or below cost."

Can an extremely unevenly shorn rug really be more valuable than an evenly shorn one?
Is it ok to describe it as 'perfect condition medium even pile throughout'?

The rug has no traces of any wear at all and is absolutely clean, but it seems to be 'tea-dyed' or 'antiqued' from ivory to light camel. (Darker and lighter areas on the back do not correspond to darker and lighter areas on the pile, as one has it with abrash.)

The shearing pattern is like a roller coaster from left to right, lower third of the rug, feels to the touch (and feet) as if someone has put pencils underneath every two to three inches, but the back is totally even. So you have almost knots showing right next to 3/8 inch pile, then very low again. On the rest of the rug the unevenness is less profound, but still noticeable.

The rug is as beautiful as on the photo (only a little darker).

Thanks Robert. Seller offered 45 USD refund, and I accepted. I just wish people would describe their rugs accurately. I think often it bothers me more that some ebay sellers misdescribe their rugs ('perfect condition even pile' and 'lies perfectly flat' in this case) rather than the defects themselves.

Thanks Chris. Why are they called Hamadan Bijar? Is it the area they are made or the weave? This one is definitely soft, not like those old very thick ones, but it doesn't look like a Hamadan weave. I attach a pic of the back. (The weave is symmetrical)

Here are some pics, as always rather lousy, sorry. The selvages wrap around six cotton warps, bundled, but otherwise identical to the rest of the warps. The other warps come out sort of always one on top of another. The above pic is too dark. The 'light side' of the rug looks almost ivory.
