The ebay seller faresalesman have for a while posted hundreds of rugs, all in very good condition it seems, which they date as "c.1930s". When I have asked for a particular rug on which particular features they base the date, the answer is mostly along the lines "it looked like that to us".

For all my lay-person's eye can tell, some of the rugs could be c1970s as well as c1930s, and everything in between, so I'm somewhat reticent to buy.

My question: has anyone here looked at the rugs of this seller over the last months and can tell whether the dating is by and large accurate? or more generally, whether their prices are acceptable?

I looked at their carpets. Sometimes the age is correct and sometimes not. But this does not mean that he is deceiving, there is no such carpets dealer in this world that can know everything about all the carpets.

Well the usual answer. If you read Terms & Conditions at the major auctions, there is also written that their evaluation is only their opinion.

Bukhara, I don't think they deceive. It's just that I'd really like to learn how to date older rugs myself, and so their answer isn't very useful for that.

This one looks oldish to me, but don't know why. I've seen the kind of colour scheme, sort of 'soft-jeweltone', but wouldn't know whether 1920's, rather than say late 1930's.

And this one, which to me looks like a very interesting attempt at getting islimi onto a village bidjar, I couldn't tell at all. If someone told me it's 1980s, I'd have nothing to argue that it's earlier, though I'd like to ...

In my opinion all these carpets from 1950-1960. Although this is only my opinion (I am not an expert on Iranian rugs)

Many thanks Bukhara - even if you're no expert on Iranian rugs, you sure have more experience than I.

I'd still be interested what Robert (RugPro) might have to say, as to whether there are any visible criteria which I could learn to see, regarding the ages of rugs like these.

of all the rugs listed above, this is the winner - best colors, doesnt have the chemical wash burning the tones. the rug does look wider on one end, but the price talks. you're right to question age. I would say 1950's or even 60's for some of these, exception the first one which may be a little older, but not much.

Thanks so much for your post, Robert. That was the one I'd been ogling for over a month. My man calls it the batman rug, because of the centre medaillon, I think of it as showing eight cat heads. Every rug a Rorschach test ...

I have noticed several "cat head" designs (especially black cat) in rugs. There were some that I wouldn't even consider because of the nature of these "cat heads". This is a good looking rug, though.
