I hope I can get photos in this from the rug I bought.

Sorry, I was not able to get the photo posted. This might work.

Are you sure this is the whole rug? Could it be missing the outer guard border? (E.g. another zigzag border like the one that separates the main border (ivory) from the field?)

Well if it has a lot of red color bleed, I may have a problem washing it. It is supposed to be 30 -40 years old, and from the price I paid, $51. shipped, it probably is. I wanted a semi antique rug that was Qashqai or close to that. I guess it is just Shiraz but it looks Qashqai.

Hopefully it is the whole rug Shereen, or if not it is bound well. I believe the ones that I have seen on the web had borders similar to this usually, but I am not very familiar with Shiraz rugs. This seller has a pretty good rep.

The above is a photo of the bottom. It looks like this is the original border to me, and that the binding is pretty well done (better in respects than the Koliaie that we bought). I have a booger of a time spelling that name. Thanks.

Hi,

What people would need is a photo of the selvages, I believe, to see whether they are original.

I actually think the rug looks nice, the tertiary elements (the playful little motives) are not entirely symmetrical, which shows the weaver took a certain creative liberty, which is often missing in semi-antique rugs. And if you have the rug not as an investment, but for your enjoyment, it shouldn't matter whether it is complete.

As to the seller, the rug a bit looks like those from Pakobel. They have the habit of using parts of rugs and rebinding them or even putting a border from a different rug around them, and they call all those rugs semi-antique shirazi, whether they are shirazi or not.

Equally, they sell rug fragment-patchworks where lesser worn borders of worn rugs have been sown together, sometimes with extra guard borders added on two or four sides, and they call these semi-antique baloch, although the weavings are mostly not balouchi weavings.

I personally don't mind this: you can usually see the patchwork well on the photos, and it is an interesting way of recycling used rugs. You still get the benefit of the hand-knotted look, even if part of a patchwork rug. (Yours is not patchwork.)

What exactly is the selvedge? I love rugs, my family has raised sheep forever, and Persian rugs have been popular in West Texas for many years. We have 2 really nice rugs, and some bargains (hopefully) I have picked up on eBay. Did you look at the photo of the bottom of the rug that I just posted? Thanks.

I think the following photo shows the selvedge which I was calling the binding. I will learn some more one of these days.

The selvedge edge is the sides . The barber pole look. That is the way shiraz sides are done . It is one of there characteristics.

Thanks, Harry. I got the rug yesterday. It wasn't mentioned on eBay, but it has a big repair, but it is very well done. I had never seen a repair before so it was interesting. A fairly heavy rug. It is interesting, it may be a little heavier than the 2 expensive rugs we have. The expensive runner we bought, from a dealer in New Mexico, is I believe a Qashqai pattern copy from Hamadan. I have the 2 rugs together, and it seems like the Hamadan rug has fake abrash and the Shiraz rug has real abrash.

To me this rug is a good deal even with the repair, just because I want to enjoy the rug. I really admire and respect the work rug weavers do in Iran, and am just sort of interested in the Qashqai. Is there any chance this rug may have been made by Qashqai. Thanks.

When I bid on it, I wasn't expecting to buy it. My wife has a rule: no more rugs! I had to sneak around. It showed up yesterday and I had to confess. If it is around 35 years old, it is in really good shape except for the repaired tear (I knew they were good at doing it, but I didn't know how good).
