Hi there, friends!
I would be glad if anyone could help me to identify &/or value this rug,
which is a Bay bargain. It is 4' 10" (148 cm) x 2' 10" (85.5 cm) & I think it is made of silk -
at least it has a very dense compact weave. It is in very good condition, with a small ring
attached to one of the top fringes, indicating it has probably spent its life hung on a wall.
I'm guessing it's Turkish and about 50 years old but these are only guesses.

Burn test reveals:
fringe smells like burning paper so I think a cotton foundation,
pile smells like burning hair so wool or silk,
from lustre and density of pile I think silk.

P.S. I intend to put it on e-bay for auction tomorrow,
but I am concerned with describing it accurately & it would
be nice to have some idea of value.

One final detail is that is not symetrical but wider at 'foot' end

hi tony this looks like a turkish kayseri, semi antique around 50 years old. could be older or newer. many were made with mercerized cotton. if it is silk on cotton, it's a bit unusual, but not impossible. sounds like your burn test revealed good results. auction value maybe $300 as the color and design may not appeal to a huge audience. liveauctioneers is a good place to check out some past prices. would be interested to see what the others say.

Thank you! I've just repeated burn test on pile & it smells like paper! So maybe cotton pile. Does mercerising give the cotton a shine?
& if it is cotton, does it have any value?

Here's a mercerized cotton on cotton Kayseri prayer sold at Christies, 1999, with estimated and realized value, unfortunately NO PIC, but motive like yours.

And yes, mercerized cotton can be shiny.

I'm going to post some photos of a Kilim I got in Konya, Turkey, over 10 years ago;
I've no idea of its value now, I paid over £100 for it then, it's a bit faded.

I'm not an expert like some people on this forum. You should get some better idea about value and age about either rug from them.
