howyd, i was just seeing about getting some feedback on this one from the rug masters (rugpro, ed, chris, etc....)...i'm very close to pulling the trigger on this one and i'm just wondering if the price warrants the rug...it'd be 75 dollars for the rug and 15-20 for shipping...

...is the age correct? seems newer to me, but have no clue...

Everyone wants Kermans and Sarouks but they were made for the American market. I'd
save my money and buy a real oriental rug. There are many rugs in this sale under $1500 or
$1000 that are well worth the money. These auctions are were the dealers and shop owners
replenish their stock. There are a few less than $500 too.

This is a Kerman from about 1950. 95,- USD? I wouldnt buy.

...thanks for both of your replies...ed, i completely see your point...it's just i'm new to the whole rug game and try to find deals on craigslist as a way of hopefully finding something really, really worth while... also, i tend to gravitate towards the kermans and sarouks because they're what i like. i actually really like the older kermans, around the late 19th century and early 20th, but all i seem to find that i can afforc are mid-century pieces...

for instance, i like rugs like this:

....but if i do go w/ skinners, how do i know i'm getting a deal???

...also, what rugs do you both like...what are the 'real' oriental rugs...i'm very curious to see!!!

oh, and i'm not going to buy the kerman...

Hi, if you like the 1950s Kerman's, there's a similar one on e-bay with 'best offer', but larger and seemingly less electric pinks, perhaps you can get a deal on that. (But I don't know this kind of rug, so don't know what it's worth.) I attach a picture. ebay number is 230375170117. Size is 3' 10" x 7' 2"

It's not that I'm pushing the auctions but it's a good way to see lots of rugs in one place.
Real rugs just means rugs that were used in everyday life and not made for export. The best ones
were usually made before the turn of the century. That's a terrible picture that Skinner's has
for that Kirman but I'm not impressed. I used to like Senna's and Bijar's then Balouchi's but
I'm tending toward Turkish now. Caucasians were in there somewhere.

Ed, the picture is not from Skinner's. It's a rug on ebay. I was just trying to find something for Mosaic08's taste.
Myself, I prefer antique rugs. Here's a Fereghan from the Skinner's auction that I think is quite amazing (but have neither room nor money for it at the moment, alas). I started out with camel ground baluchis and Turkmen rugs, then Konyas and Turkish kelims, now I'm exploring non-commercially produced antique city rugs.

mosaic, 75 is not bad but it does have color run. 1950's is about right for age.

...thanks, but i'm going to pass...didn't really 'love it', just kind of liked it...

...but this what i really wanted and like to see...some great discussion on rugs... now, in looking back at the example i sent the other day of the kerman from skinner, i too was unimpressed when viewed on a larger monitor (i was using an ebook), so, to rectify that, i've included the types of rugs i love... and yes, i do seem to favor the oriental rugs made for the american market...what can i say...the guy who 'invented' the sarouk had me pegged 80 years before i even knew it!

so, here they are...a couple from metropolitan carpet...and remember, i'm a rug newbie, so it's not that these are all i like, i just haven't been exposed to everything else...yet...

please let me know your thoughts...and of couse where i can get similar rugs of great quality at a lot lower price!!!

Thats the business someone of us earn their money. Give me an order and i will take look. There is a wonderfull 10 to 13 Kerman from about 1920 lying at a friends store.

Chris, i completely understand, i know this is how some of you make your living...and i apologize if i sounded insincere. yes, please do show me some photos...however, you're located in europe, correct...won't shipping cost a fortune???

...also, i enjoy the hunt, so i don't mind looking at a bunch of bad rugs on craigslist in hopes of landing something of modest value...i understand i'm not going to find that 200 year old antique rug on craigslist and get it for 'a song'...which, could happen, but because of what i'm interested in (sarouks, kermans), i'd probably over look it for something that i thought was of no value and most on here that new a thing or two would be salivating over it...

I can't believe they are calling this a Senna because it looks like a Feraghan Sarouk to me.
A Senna is one of the easiest weaves to distinguish so they either made a mistake or someone is
making money under false pretenses. You have to watch yourselves buying or selling at any auction
even the big time ones, they will buy your stuff if the reserve isn't high enough.

I just noticed those "experts" at Skinners called that Kerman I put up a prayer rug so I think they
really thought that was a Senna because it looked like one from the front. Think they would hire
us.
