Hi!
I am happy to have found this forum. I have a few rugs that my husband bought in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia about 20 years ago and also one from Turkey.
I tried to use the "Appraisal form" that appears on the website but when I tried to "send" it did not work. So I'm hoping I can get some help here. I'm so grateful that I can come here and get an idea about the value of the carpets as we would like to sell them now. We have an interested buyer who is waiting for me to tell him some prices.
I thought I would start with the following carpet. The seller in Jeddah, an Afghan himself, said this one is a 'Chokh' from the Ali Khoja family. It is lambs wool and was 15 to 20 years old at the time. It would then now be 35-40 years old. It is partly a beautiful indigo colour. It is symetrical and has no worn areas and although not freshly cleaned is clean and could be used as is.
Here are the pictures I have taken:

Hello.
Yes, this is something i would call an Ali Khoja Baluch from about 1980. Chokh...what is this? Is this the meaning for "eyes" in India? Maybe the design is called Chokh.

http://www.darmuseum.org.../Exhibitions/Exh_8.html where is says:

Quote:
We know of the works of the Kaitag, Chokh and Kazikmukh craftsmen of the 18th century, who embroidered pillows, bedspreads, payer rugs, and saddlecloths.

http://www.azerbaijanrug...r/kuba-shahnazarli3.htm says:
Quote:
These medallions can be repeated according to the general size of the carpet. If it is with one "gol" they call it "tekgöl", if there are two medallions, it is called "Jut-göllu". The carpets with more than two medallions are called chokh-göllu.

Thank you Chris and netjim for claryfying the significance of the names related to the carpet. I read a little more about the Chokh at : http://www.slideshare.ne...ons-of-dagestan-1027616
Would you need more information to estimate it's value? We paid SR 1000 for it at the time.

Being new to the forum, I'm not sure I'm in the right section! Should have I posted my query in "Discussions about Rug Rag Appraisals" ? I don't seem to be generating any comments about an appraisal for my carpet. I would really appreciate it if someone could let me know where or how to proceed to get some feedback. Thank you.

Theres some good info in this thread

It's tough to give a value when we dont have size in feet/inches. I'm not familiar with this type but dont believe the value would be too great

Thank you so much for your reply. I should have posted the size! It is 56 1/2" long x 37 1/2 wide. It is made of lamb's wool and is very pliable. With the information you gave me, I just now was able to find a very similar carpet that sold on ebay for $350. So I guess that gives me a good idea . . .
I have another question and I hope you don't mind . . .
Does it make any difference to the price of a carpet where the sale is taking place? What I mean is can a carpet go for a higher price because it is in the U.S.? For example, with this carpet, we had to pay quite a lot to have it (and our other carpets) shipped here from the Middle-East. Can I consider that when I'm deciding on a price?
Thanks so much for your advice. I'm a complete novice and have not yet sold a carpet and am hoping to learn how to judge what is a good yet reasonable price.
