... and you had enough money to buy maybe two room-sized rugs (one to keep, one to sell back home) what would you buy? When I was in London last summer, I was invited to a Pashmani wedding, and it looks like I might be able to go. It would be cool to bring back something besides a hangover.

Anton.

Nice idea. This trip will be a beautyfull experience.
But if you are not well known in rugs please do not try to make a business with it...and if try to buy original Kashmir Srinagar pure Silk for less than 200,- USD per square meter. And good luck with the customs duty.

Yeah, I don't want to go into business. I just want to get enough from the 1st carpet to pay for the second one, since I'll probably never get another chance to go to that part of the world.

A couple questions:

Why Srinagar? Is it the designs, the handiwork?
Can you point me to some online graphics of some very good Srinagar carpets?
Also, not rug related: What do you take as gifts to a Kashmiri wedding?

Bukhara,
yes, it is not the time to buy good things with US-Dollar. But i think you can get silk for about 150,- Euro as a private buyer.

This is a good example for a Kashmir silk rug. Please note the certifikate on the backside of the rug.

Chris

For this money in Kashmir, you can only buy cheap silk on cotton, 18 x 18 knots per sq.inch.

This is a good example for a Kashmir real silk on silk rug (24 x 24 knots per sq.inch):

bukhara,

this is not the truth.

You can buy in Kashmir for 50,- Euro cheap cotton on cotton. All you need is time and a good agent.

For 8 Years in Germany the price for a squaremeter Srinagar silk was 450,- DM, the price for a sqm cotton was 200,-DM...in Hamburg, Freihafen.
Today the price is 250,- Euro for silk rugs.

And the seller do not give me his best pieces without earning.

Chris,

What quality are we talking about here? We're used to stocking only Persian silk rugs but are looking into Chinese or Kashmiri silks... no experience of this market so any advice would be of great help.

As we refer to different grades of Kashmir, how does my rug fit in? Obviously it is the silk on cotton 18X18, but what about workmanship etc. The rug is 4X6. but it does have a desirable design of birds, trees etc.
The seller is local and worked for the US State Department stationed in India. One reason I ask is the same seller has a silk on silk over 24X24 kpsi.s They are only asking $700 USD for the rug. I'm not sure of the exact size, but it is the next size up from a 4X6

I'm having problems uploading the full rug picture

Grade A Kashmir silk is close to 300 euro today. Grade b or silk cotton mix 18 x 18 of course for less. $ 200 per squaremeter is extremely low, I have not had this price for years.
