It is all wool, uses a fair amount of pink with detatched floral sprays, has a floral medallion in the center. the borders look suspiciously caucasian. except there are tags on it saying it is iranian...a lilihan? i have photographed it and the tags and will try and post them...

a hand me down bought for $500 in the mid 70's at an estate sale that had LOTS of rugs. it is well-worn due to the age and i'm sure it's worth at least $500. if it's not then at least i got it for free! (but i am not that fond of it.) it is 10.5' x 8'.

Lilihan sounds good to me but $500 at an estate sale in the 70's was lots of money and more than that rug was worth. Now it's in the right range
maybe a bit more. Wonder what else they had in that sale? Never know what you'll find. It's more decorative than collectible but there will be
someone that wants it. Retail might be 6 to 8 times that price depending on condition. It doesn't look worn but it's hard to tell, need better pics.

Thanks a lot for the information, there's more I can add to it here...

Well it's better described as an estate auction. Two different groups of middle-easterners (who most likely owned rug shops) were there buying all the rugs...and my aunt really wanted this one so in order to buy it, my uncle moved directly behind one group so the other group would think the first group was bidding on it. It is well worn, the pile being almost reduced to color, warp, and weft in a few areas, the wool fringe being almost gone...and the apparent lack of cotton for any of the materials makes it seem very old. one of the tags on it appears to be some kind of signature but upon further research....

there's a '4' on top, and the numbers '9' '8' and '3' below it, I was hoping for some information as it is the most likely cause to determine the true age and origins of the rug.

Most lilihans I have seen are smaller and don't look like this one, which is why it is such a mystery to me. if you zoom into the picture, you can see the area between the medallion and borders is worn, the photo has enough detail; there's only so much you can get without picking it up for yourself.

an odd thing about the blues of this rug--they look fairly uniform with the exception of the edge, as you can see near the tape measure its all different hues...and its like that on both edges.

I just want to make sure I get what I can for it when I sell it...because it has a lot of odd details.

I think that this is most likely a Hamadan-Kazvin rug from Iran. Hamadan and Lilihan are neighbors.

Kapoutrahang. Worth very little - not really worth trying to sell imo. it is persian tho, but that doesn't mean much
