This rug was purchased 15 yrs ago in the middle east. Reported at the time to be persian silk on silk and over 50 yrs old. We have moved 8 times in the last 16 yrs and the "tags" have been lost but I am looking. The were cloth pined to the back. We had a lot of trust in the person that assisted us in the purchase. I have been unable to find any that look like this one anywhere, it is 6'4" X 4' any help identifying what type and where it originated would be appreciated.

I took the complete set that is required for an evaluation, I will attempt to post them as well, but I am new to the forum so wish me luck :) I can take any other you would like to have. Not sure how much was paid, my husband purchased it in Kuwait and was assisted by the Public Relations Official at the time, they visited dozens of carpet "suks" and he recommended this one, as well as silk on wool that I had planned on posting after this one lol.

I spoke with my husband, the carpet seller told him that it was from the "north" but language difference made a more "indepth" discussion. I researched azeri and stumbled across kazak, both of these styles are VERY similar to mine, the first ones I've found that are :) Thanks for the lead, and any other infomation anyone might be able to give would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to locate the "tag" that was pinned to the rug, I believe I removed it for safety during shipping. If I am remembering correctly (and that's a BIG IF lol) it only had 3 or 4 arabic characters on it.

My guess would be that this is from the city of Ardebil in Iran. The weave is referred to as a Flatweave Soumak. It is possible that it is silk on silk, but I think it may be more like silk on a cotton base. It is a nice piece.

I performed a "silk" test on the weave, snipped a loose thread and burned it, balled up and smelled like burning hair, not sure how to test the weft? I looked at the soumak example, it looks more like the second rug that I have, silk on wool with animals woven into it, haven't seen any animals on others so will be posting it probably tomorrow. I would like a ballpark estimate on the value for this rug if possible as well. I am thinking of selling one or both of them depending on the values even though we have had fun through the years spotting the "mistakes", the two sides, left to right, are ALMOST carbon copies but there are very subtle differences as the faith requires. And if I'm doing the math and measuring correctly the KPSI would be roughly 204. I have also counted over 9 colors. The size is 6.4 X 4

It is a courios design mix took from all over the caucasus. I see the medallium from Konagkent, the legs from an Celaberd, the Botehs from Gendje. This rug wanted to be a Sileh, but i think it is from Ardebil Jahanna told us before.

lol, I apologize if I sounded like I was doubting the post from Jahanna, not by a LONG shot. I am even below a newbie when it comes to rugs :) other than I seem to have a good "eye" for the expensive things in life, just ask my hubby. After reading his post I of course did a search and found out that the kazak comes from the ardabil area, like a said NOT EVEN a newbie :) but I am finding the search enlightening and entertaining. I've seen some real beauties, and some real duds. But a treasure is only a treasure if you have to dig for it. Thanks for supplying the shovels.... and if anyone has a backhoe out there.......................... :)
