A lot of people have different opinions on the actual folding/rolling procedure, but here it goes.

1- have the rug professionally washed. This usually costs about $2 per square foot. Remind them to not bleach the fringe. It doesn't matter how clean you think the rug is. After many, many years in the business, I have learned the hard way that a rug which is stored is exponentially more susceptible to moths, which as you know are everywhere if you see them or not.

2- After the rug is washed, you want to roll it width wise and throw down some moth flakes on the rug. If you do not have space for the rug if it is rolled width wise (9'?), you can fold it in half or thirds which some people say is not good for the rug, but I know people with Kermans that have been folded and rolled for nearly 50 years in some cases. The worst case scenario, you're going to need to steam the rug after storing

3-After the rug has been folded and rolled or simply rolled, wrap it into simple brown paper. You want to use commercial quality paper and plastic, and do as neat a job as possible as you'll have to check on the rug every 6 months or so, and inevitably, use the same plastic.

Never store the rug in a basement or garage. The moisture will ruin the rug. Keep it in a closet, or somewhere where it won't be exposed to humidity or sunlight. Remember, the moth flakes will have an odor, but this should go away after several weeks.
