I need help in identifying this rug and its origin.
I have not seen rugs with crosses so this is what really puzzles me.
The rug measures approximately 74"x96" and appears to be hand knotted as none of the patterns are even.
Also I would like to know the value if possible.
Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
George

Looks like a newer Serab from northwest Iran.

Maybe I missed something here... Do you have a photograph of the whole rug?

I believe it is the way the shades of light hit it. I have owned it for approximately 2 years pet free. It has only one spot (rust spot) about the size of a nickel on it.

I think so, an older one too. Especially because the pile appears a little thicker, the way the selvages are too. It must have had a wash of some sort. the pile is very high luster. Normally I would say it's gazni wool, and it could be but the fringe shows some tinting too. not uncommon for a washed rug to show inconsistencies in tone too or odd blotches to appear. I don't think that's lighting. Design has northwest persian serapi border, but influence from khotan too in the field

How did you come about owning this rug?

In the photo of the back it doesn't look Afgani or Pakastani. It might have had some kind of wash but I still think it's a Persian rug.
It looks heavier than most non Persian rugs. When did you see such fat warps on a Pak or Afgan rug?

I picked this rug up about 2 years ago at a thrift store for $30.00.
I really dont know much about this subject but I can say it is a very very heavy rug...
Any idea on value?

I've seen older paki afghani that are pretty thick wefted and heavier gauge, but it very well could be Persian - the way the fringe is knotted too. I don't know about serab only because the wool looks a lot more refined and oily than a lot of the serabs ive seen which could be comparable. that in conjunction to elements in design and colors, but to tell you the truth, this one has me kinda stumped.

Monkey, does it have any wash tags on it?
