...seller states its 10x14, appraised at 5K and selling for 800...we like it, but want to get everyone's thoughts...i'm pretty sure it's sarouk and the same quality and vintage as our last one...

...also, the seller will be shipping and there's someone else interested, so i need a quick response so we can decide...

thanks again!!!!

grab this rug for 800. just make sure there are no pet stains, dry rot, or other serious problems. if that one area is the only one worn to knot heads, it's a very good price at 800... If the entire rug is even low wear, very good. one thing - it does look slightly irregular in shape or size. perhaps one side longer than the other. if that's of concern to you or is a make or break for the area intended, ask

p.s. there is one area where the selvages look like they may need work. otherwise good looking carpet, a little more subtle than most would like to see for a sarouk, but a nice find. don't think it's as old as your other, this is probably a little newer.

...thanks for the reply...seemed like a really nice piece and a really good deal... we'll see how much shipping will be...hopefully i'll talk w/ them tomorrow... is there anything i want to think about in terms of asking they do for the shipping?

...and what would be your guess on age? 30's, early 40's...the design does seem more simple, but not in a bad way... would you have a guess on value based on what you've seen so far???

thanks again!

It doesn't look to old ca. 1940 maybe a little older. Seems like a good deals if there aren't any problems like rugpro says.

Yes, buy. I wonder how many chances you got in past to buy good rugs. Congratulation.

...well, i spoke w/ them this morning and i think we're going to buy it. got it down to 550 plus shipping...i think it's a good deal, but hopefully, like everyone has said, the condition will be good...i think shipping will probably be 150, so 700 out the door is a good price...of course, i'll have to have it cleaned, which will be another couple of hundred...

...now this is it, i need to stop buying...and looking, because that's when i get in trouble :) i just love these type of rugs and can't pass up a deal... so, do you think i could get much on a resale? would a local oriental rug store be interested in this rug???

please let me know and thanks for your comments!!!

...okay, i got the rug...beautiful! i tried to take it to Mo at Connesuier Oriental Rug in Evanston, IL, (who did the work on our last sarouk) but he was closed for the day unfortunately, so i brought it to another place that i had been to before and actually cleaned the large green kerman we own...i'm always skeptical of these people, but i wanted to hear what they had to say...

so, they looked at it and told me it was a MOHAJERAN SAROUK, circa early 1920 or even 1910, and were immediately interested in purchasing it. they said it was in good condition w/ a little uneven wear, but overall it had great colors and an interesting design, or drawing as they refered to it. also, they would not tell me how much they'd give me until i was certain that i would sell it to them...so, my question is this: is this standard practice, and w/ this new information, would anyone have a better idea of value? i will be able to take more photos after the weekend (we'll be out of town)....

...i am going to take it to Mo next week to have him take a look at it and access it and clean it... please let me know your thoughts. also, the rug is 10'4x13'2...
THANKS!!!!

I'm surprised they told you it was a Mohajaran but it isn't uncommon at all for them not to give you a price if your not ready to sell.
Did they say they would give you the best price if you were going to sell? It looks painted so I don't think it could be as old as they
say but it's still a great rug for what it is. I'm pretty sure they weren't made in the teens but maybe started in the 1920's and are
just a better looking Sarouk. I know they are worth more than regular Sarouks. It could be from the 1920's or 30's. I'd say early 30's.

...good observation...the didn't at first mentioned it was Mohajaran, actually there was another sales associate that walked by and mentioned that it was...he also ask the sales associate if he had told me why the brown died wool was low in its particular areas...which the first guy did not. he said it was because they had initially used metalic shavings in the die that would eat the wool away, and that once they figured it out that it did this they changed that process... i think the first sales associate was a little preturbed the second guy was willing to give some such great information away... it seemed to blow his poker face. also, they did not mention anything about giving me the best price if i did decide to sell...

...so, based on all this information, does anyone want to venture an estimate of value???

thanks.

You have a $5,000 appraisal already. Did you put it in the rug estimator. Retail would be more than the appraisal so I'd say you did
exceptionally well.

There are also some older Saruk from 1910 recolored. I often saw wonderful light-salmon one colored into red.

...thanks for the replies. i actually don't have an appraisal, the seller said that in the listing but never supplied anything....so that's why i'm asking everyone here... also, do you think it's painted...for some reason, to me it doesn't appear so, but then again i'm no expert...and the people at the rug store i went to friday did not make any mention of it being so either; could it be possible it is not.

...obviously there is only so much one can tell from a photo, but i would appreciate everyone's response on their opinion of quality and value...

thanks again!

okay, i just brought it to Mo at Connesuier Oriental Rug...here is what he said...

...he liked it and wanted to buy it...said it had some issues, but nothing that couldn't be taken care of... it did have some small dog urine stains, but said they were only small and were not repeated, which is a good thing (he said he normally sees pet stains where dogs and cats will go in the same place over and over, which is impossible to get out)... but since it does have a little bit of urine, he'll need to do some additional cleaning, which, with the end repairs and minor salvage, puts the cost at 700 dollars...

so, right now, i'm in at 700 plus the potential 700 of bringing it up to great condition...

now, he does have a buyer of a sarouk of this size (which is 10x13) and is offering me 1200 dollars...

...so, here is my question, based on everything we know...what would each of you do given your knowledge of the industry, what i have into it, what it will take/cost to fix, what he is offering...and the fact that i really don't have a place for it... of course, i want to do the best thing and could always use the money, but i really do like this rug and am always afraid of making a bad deal...also, what about mo's offer...is it inline, or is it a low ball... i asked him honestly what he would sell it for and he said somewhere between 3-4k...so, again, is this a reasonable offer based on what would be considered a reasonable return on his mark-up...

...also, what about the potential for it to be a Mohajaran Sarouk...as everyone in the community ruled this out...mo was not quick to say it was, but did say it is definately 1920s...

...so, what does everyone think...and rugpro, what would you do in my shoes having known me a little bit from all my prior posts and feelings towards rugs?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

i eagerly await everyone's thoughts!!!

mohajeran makes sense. I wouldn't sell immediately. pet stains are a pain to remove, although $700 may seem intimidating. explain to the cleaner that's a bit more of an investment you were expecting, and were wondering if he could give an estimate with a breakdown as to the work being done. eg. how many square feet need specific attention, what type of wash equipment would be used, would they throw in repairs to the selvages in the spirit of the originals. Are they cleaning themselves in house or sending out? Let him sell you on it a little and find out what sort of room there is. depending on how serious the stains are and how good a job they do, it may not be that bad a price. Use the information to shop around a little. you may end up going back to them, but at least you have more info. As for the date, I would agree, it's in the first quarter 20th.

as for suggestions? if i were in your shoes I would shop around to have the rug cleaned as said above. then have it cleaned. hopefully the job comes out well. Keep the in storage or use afterward. during this time, list it on eBay for $3,500 - 4,000 with a best offer. maybe something interesting comes around. in the meantime, i would enjoy the rug. just dont store it without cleaning first tho. you have a good eye for rugs and it's getting better! it's really awesome to see this working out well for you!

rugpro, thanks so much for the response...i think you're right, i think we're going to keep it...it's such a nice rug and you don't find them everyday...i'd hate to make a quick decision to sell now and then regret it later... i can always sell it later...even if i get some use and sell it for what i put into it, it's still a win/win...

...also, here is the break-down on the repairs he gave me...280 for hand cleaning, 280 for pet-stain removal (seemed to be a big process from his explanation), 160 for end repair (basically securing one whole side and a little bit of reconstructing) and selvages... i think it's a good price on all of it, but i guess i wasn't looking on putting that much into it right now... i know from what mo did on our last sarouk that the end product will be amazing and worth the cost...i do trust him and know he has a passion for caring/repairing rugs correctly...also, they do everything in-house...he claims that most stores don't actually clean rugs, they just shampoo them and that he normally takes one day to do a carpet this size when many will do dozens....

...as for my 'eye', i have to say a big thanks to you and to the others on this site (mostly you since you've been commenting on all the random rugs i've posted from the beginning) for stirring me in the right direction, and specifically in helping me define what types and styles of rugs i really love...of course, i'm still on the look-out for a late nineteenth century kerman that i can find cheap...

...sincerely, thanks again for all your advice and information rugpro...

I thought we decided it was a Mohajaran Sarouk. You can always go back to the first guy and tell him you decided you can't use the
rug and want $3000 for it or even $3500 for it. See what he says and start from there. Let them wash it and repair it on their time.
This is if you really don't want to keep it. $1200 sounds low to me.

I am a dealer and a specialist cleaner in the UK. The price for cleaning seems very reasonable. However, don't be fooled into thinking that Hand-Cleaning is better than cleaning with the help of machines. Some old delicate rugs or silk rugs may need hand-cleaning, but I can assure you a machine cleaned rug will be cleaner. How do you get the dust out without the use of a beating machine? If you are soaking the rug, how will you get the water out before putting it in a drying room? We have moved on from thinking that just rolling a rug in the snow cleans it.

As for the value, it looks like a nice rug and should be worth $3-5000 but without seeing it in the flesh none of us experts can really be certain. You could try an auction house for valuation.
Good luck
Robert
