Is this a strange place for a signature or what?

That certainly is a little odd. Turkish rugs, you usually find them in the upper left hand corner outside of the border. Armenia is usually somewhere in the field to the upper left corner or to the side of the medallion. Iranian rugs are usually signed centered in the border. Interesting placement, and very geometric too

Yes, very central. The first thing that came to mind when I saw that was the Baptisty doors at the Cathedral in Florence. Engraved in one of the panels is the inscription "Andrea Pisano made me in 1330." This was hubris to say the least on a religious edifice and a sign of the times. Not that a carpet is a religious edifice, at least not one like that, but the central bold signature, of some kind, seems to want very badly to be noticed as the jewel in this particular rug. I wonder what the story is.

The second link posted is actually what most people call a Mashad, which features a Kashan Design to my eye, not Sarouk. You also would probably find the colors to be much brighter in person maybe borderline flourescent. I can't quite tell, but from my monitor the background looks like it could be dark purple or blue, but I'm leaning toward the purple. Do you see this too?
