I've seen the rug in person. It's beautiful. I'm a novice for sure, but looks to be hand knotted, the wool is beautiful and shiny, the fringe appears to be cotton. The colors are muted, and the "blacks" are almost greenish in nature. The pile was surprisingly plush- I'm used to very thin rugs when they're iranian, no?

She claims she paid $11,000 in 2000. Do you believe it? They seem to be good people and honest. She has agreed to take $1700 for it. I'm not a collector; I just want a beautiful rug in my livingroom

Believe it or not, if this family purchased this rug at a department store and/or through an interior decorator, the cost could very well have been $11,000 back in 2000. These rugs are called Peshawars and sometimes Oushaks - they are antique reproductions (and this is not a Haj-Jalili). This rug is hand-knotted and most likely Indian or Pakistani in origin. Rugs of this style are still in vogue and sell at designer prices. Rugs of this type, depending on the weave, will go for $1500-$2500 at a fair-priced rug establishment. If you are in love with this and it appears to be in good condition, I would buy it, as you may or may not come across this exact pattern again.

Siloxane, I'd do some research on the Haji Jalili carpets, their origin, the story behind them and their later copy in other workshops and on down the road. Saying authentic Haji Jalili is almost like saying authentic Michaelangelo or Da Vinci. It's even more fun when you see "authentic Haji Jalilis" on eBay. Child Please! :)

Thanks kindly to both of you for replying. I did do some internet research, and quickly concluded that I thought the rug was mis-represented as a Haj Jalili, from the information I was able to gather. I know i can pay $1700 for a rubber-smelling glued on rug at pottery barn, and I thought this was a better spend of my 2k. It's really pretty!

It is very pretty. And I too am shocked at what they charge for machine made mass produced "fakes" that everybody and his brother-in-law will have on their floor that season.
