Hello, my name is Ryan Malone, I work with Little-Persia a specialist dealer in Scotland (UK). We source rugs from Iran, India, Turkey & Afghanistan.

I've created a hand-knotted rug calculator tool which I hope will come in handy, it's available here: Persian rug tool and estimates the knotting time your a rug based on it's area and KPSI.

I've used 8 knots per minute (just under 4000 per day) as an average for the typical weaver, if anyone has any comment on this I'm open to changing it as I've found it hard to get a solid figure.

Let me know what you think!

Thanks,

Ryan

Thanks,

I've recently changed the knots per minute from 8 to 12 as I feel this is more accurate based on the opinions of several experts.

Hi Ryan!

Nice calculator. It's a great idea. We had a similar calculator which never was officially launched. If you have suggestions for any of our automated tools free to e-mail me info@rugrag.com

I just took a look at the weaving time.

Correct me if I'm mistaken please:

A rug, 8' x 10' at 80 KPSI

80 KPSI * 144 (square inches in square foot) * 80 (total square footage of the rug) = 921,600 knots

The calculator comes up with 9,920,000

For an 80 KPSI rug, we estimate 2 - 3 weavers in 8x10 size and ~ 4-7 months not including production outside of weaving.

Average the two time spans together = 5.5 months, 2.5 weavers = 1,000,000 knots

Divide 1,000,000 by 2.5 weavers to find out 1 weaver production = 400,000 knots per 1 worker (based upon the calculator's assumption of 1 weaver.)

The calculator currently shows approximately 4 years 8 months for one weaver to complete or 55 months. The multiplier of 10 is in there somewhere, otherwise, you're right on the money.

All the best,
David Dilmaghani

cloudband

8' by 10' is roughly 3.2m by 2.5m... if you put that in with 80KPSI the calculator gives 992,000 knots... not sure how you were getting 9,920,000, were you putting in the period?

The time taken also shows 172 days (perhaps when you posted there was an error but I can't remember changing anything!) which is about 6 months.

Based on your information I should maybe change the knots per minute back down to 8 or maybe to 10?
