Hello.

Now its my turn to ask the rug people about a piece i bought yesterday. It is not in my hands but i am very curios to feel the quality in my fingers.
I have an idea. What is your opinion about orign and age? The size is about 6 by 4.

Thanks for helping with that problem!

You have a nice one. It's a shame the middle is missing. I'd call it a Bakhshaish or at least hope that's what it is was if I had it ca 1930.

Hi Ed.

The second big pic is put together by to pics...that was not my intention. The rug is complete...thank god!
Your guess is Bakshaish? I would not be angry about that. What about Ferahan!?

I wouldn't want that thumb to be mine either. My first idea was Feraghan, I'm not sure what made me think of Baksaish but the weave
is consistence with Arak rugs. When do you date it.

Ed,
two weeks ago i saw a Farahan you MUST say it is a Serapi. Same design but different weaving.
I hope the colors are as good as on the first pic. But on the backside i see two colors they are rather bright, a red and a orange. So i guess this is a 1910 one.

The wool looks very good in the pictures so the colors should be good too. The problem is very low pile.
Unusual design for a Feraghan but that's what it looks like the more I think about it. The orange looks like
it might be alright but the pinkish color I'd worry about not sure about the red.

What did you mean with "or at least hope that's what it is was if I had it ca 1930."? My english is very miserable you must know.

Bakshaish is a great rug so I would hope it was from there. ca. 1930 means about 1930. ca. is abbreviation for circa.

Interesting thoughts on weaving area. I don't think it's farahan but could be. I would say old ardebil

Ok Ed.

RugPro,
i remember some Ardebil from about 1940. I call them Bolschiwiki rugs. They are thin in weaving and do have woolen warps. The design most is caucasian style. Do you mean those one?
I do call this one a Farahan because of (weaving, of course) the border design. I never saw this kind of border in rugs except Senneh and Farahan. F.e. like the border of this rug:

I haven't seen too many rugs like this, but it just has several tabriz elements to it. The minor guard border is unlike anything I've ever seen in a farahan. It reminds me more of Tabriz. The main border is identical to a few antique tabriz rugs I have seen. When I can get a few better examples I'll post, but here's one I came across:

With that being said, I don't think it's Tabriz at all, but perhaps an not too far, e.g. Ardebil. I think the rug is too forward for ferahan. the weave is similar to one, but strikes me as more northern

Is it yours? O_O

I was busy and browsed the last 20 carpet auctions and found the following rug: http://www.sothebys.com/...ail.jsp?lot_id=159423420
I do not think the border design is unusual for Farahan rugs include the small carnations. The tabriz border appears to me more like a small sector of the Hershang theme.

ha i wish it were mine. I'm very inclined to say feraghan type, especially because of the border which is very much typical, but there are so many elements to this rug which makes me think ther may be a different attribution. I haven't really seen too many of the early second quarter of feraghan to really say, but the reason I say ardebil as a possibility is the finer weave, longer fringe (if original) and the hints to bijar, tabriz, and other types. It reminds me a lot of a rug I saw at a nyc dealer which he had marked as an ardebil too. I will see if I can get photos. either way, a very interesting rug

I think Rugpro got the area correct with Ardabil.
Look at these. I know they are newer but
they seem very similar.

Hi Ed.

LOL...the same i posted before!
Well, Ardabil old rugs do have symmetric weaving i remember. And most wool warps. And look like this: http://www.susansilverantiques.com/Misc/52
The other kind of Ardabil is Meshkin or Sarab, this kind of Azerbaijan rugs aren´t old and the old one do also have woolen warps.
What i see in my rug is depressed asymmetric cotton warps.

I remember that type of Ardabil with wool warps that looks like Caucasian rugs a little. Maybe it's a Azerbaijan area rug from some other
town. Looks like it is a workshop rug from a small city or town if not a larger city I'm sure for export. When you get it maybe you will have a better
idea of what it is.

Does it have one or two wefts between rows of knots?
Thanks for the update.

Original Feraghans had only one weft and are extremely rare, your design doesn't seem Feraghan but might be. I can't remember ever seeing
a Feraghan. If that is a Feraghan it's in very good shape. You did mean Feraghan and not Feraghan Sarouk?

I know the typical Feraghan Saruk, they are in relation to fine Feraghan heavy and strong. I had a few pices in my hand. I do not have the will to make my rug better than it is. Maybe it is a Saruk from this region. I saw a few very brillant colored Feraghan in lot of auktions. The most with small Herati pattern. Some with brght design. But every time with very flat pile and rather thin from weaving.

I was only able to pull up the pic of the back on my computer, but it looks like a Bakhtiari to me. Is that a possibility?

Jahanna,
thank you for looking on this rug. I love Bachtiar rugs. And if this one should be a Bachtiar it is ok for me. But i guess it is from Saruk.
