I have a rug that is a non-traditional hand-knotted rug. Its a muslim prayer rug that I've had up in storage for 30 years. I had gotten it from an estate sale that my dad worked on. Iam guessing its over 50 years old. I am hoping someone out there in this world can give me some information on this rug.

I also note that it bears a striking resemblance to a little piece I picked up on e-bay a couple of months ago for about $35 *but*
that piece is less colorful and definately machine made.

I will be interested to see better and detailed pics of this one. Angel

The $35 one is a machine made - Not handmade.
Sorry but I can't tell much of anything from those pictures. If I may suggest.....
back off a little when photographing. It may be that your camera will not focus very close.
A rear image...possibly with a quarter on it will likely tell more about the hand made nature.
And maybe a rear image of the fringe....at a corner?

OK, I will do that tomorrow. I am exhausted and ready to sleep. I look forward to chatting with you tomorrow evening, if you're around. It was nearly 100 degrees today and humid, so i'm extra tired. Night.

Hi,

I agree with netjim. It could be a little better than some of the ones on ebay, but we're really not looking at something with high value. More photos will help

OK, guys......I am attaching more pics. My camera doesn't show what it needs to show, in my opinion. Its frustrating! I did my best. I am going to bed now because I worked all day and didn't get around to the rug until late. Just let me know your thoughts, etc. I want to sell it but not at $35. Its been collecting dust for 30 years. I got it when I was 18. I folded it up and left it. I cleaned out my attic and there it was just as it was 30 years ago. I do believe that its machine made. Its quite beautiful but it doesn't have a place here in my home. Unfortunately.

but not at $35
uh, okay but
sorry but I just don't see that selling for even $100.
I have been offered $50 for mine but decided to let it stay on the wall....it's a pretty neat (and different) wall hanging. (Yours is a good bit more colorful than mine.)

I would suggest you try craigs list and hope for the best but don't expect a lot of bucks.
And remember
that's why Baskin & Robbins makes 31 flavors. Someone out there may want it enough to pay more than I would expect Angel but I think you should be prepared to accept "not much" or keep it.

(donate it to Goodwill and get tax decution?)

My thought is that is not a prayer rug. It may be what is frequently called a prayer rug because of size, but the motif is more "tourist/souvenier" and even though it looks like typical Muslim architecture, the configuration of the design with two equal panels is not what one would find in a prayer rug. You couldn't really pray on that rug in the way prayer rugs are prayed on. Of course, one can pray on any rug, but to call it a "prayer rug" it would require certain configurations of imagery and layout where you can stand and place your body during the different positions of prayer. I posted several images of prayer rugs on another thread about prayer rugs.

Thank you Krowgyrl......I am thinking that I will hang onto this rug now. I am not exactly sure how to display it. Any ideas?

An easy way to hang is with something like this
http://www.zoroufy.com/c...n,com_phpshop/Itemid,74/
They only sell to authorized dealers but that's easy to find from their site.

(I have 3 of their Legacy hangers in use.)

BJ .... It's an odd balance with the two panels. It's quirky and fun. You might hang it in a room with mixed designs and styles, but not showcase it like it was a glorious museum piece. Or, you could throw it over a sofa and work it into a motif, or a day bed. Like I say, if it was me and I was going to display it, it would be as a decorative accent.
