I would like to identify this rug and know a bit about its style and where it comes from. I recently purchased it while in Urumqi, Xinjiang, China. Its design appealed to me. I know a decent amount about classical Persian rugs, but this one is different and it caught me as it was simpler, rougher, and yet still held an attractiveness.

It is a camel-hair rug with a relatively thin pile. It is just over 5'x3' in dimension. It has an interesting double fringe, with patterning in the inner fringe. It was probably made in Northwestern Xinjiang or Kazakhstan.

Does anyone have any idea how it might be categorized or where/when such a rug might have been made?

Thanks again,
-JTF

Looks like a Baluch to me newer I don't see any camel wool but the dyes are suspect nice looking overall.

Yes. Ed told before it seems to be a sumach kilim from Baluchistan, newer production. And where is the camel wool?
Is it possible that China produce turkmen rugs like they did in the 80´s (Tekke turkmen)?

Thanks Ed & Chris. I've learned a lot pretty quickly here with a few key words. The 'camel hair' was what was described during the sale. In looking at other camel wool rugs it does seem that this is not one. The cloth is definitely rougher than other cottons and wools I am used to, and the fringe is a bit more golden - but I suppose that could be just dye.

If I had to guess, I would guess that it was probably not made in Xinjiang - it was a rare style around there and only found in places that had a much wider variety of rugs, seemingly from all over. However there is a lot of traffic up in that area, and there are Turkish immigrants and communities from all of the 'Stans' around there.

This is a Baluch from Pakistan. In Xinjiang comes many carpets dealers from Pakistan, to find antique Xinjiang carpets. These cheap kilims they are brought as part of payments for antique carpets.
