apx 12ft x 7.5 (doesn't include fringe)
Was bought by my father at an estate sale in Georgetown, Texas apx 10 years ago (unknown price or age, however the home was one of the oldest in the town). He has always called it the Persian ("Get those cats off the Persian!" or "No shoes on the Persian!!!") so I assume that's what it is. I remember it being in our home, low traffic area (one of those rooms w/fancy chairs that no one ever uses - haha). There is a stain on the fringe (photo below) that I remember being there as long as we've had it, so I don't know what it is. There is also a loose/torn thread (if that's what it's called - photos below). Other than that, and a little wear on one edge (photo below) it is in very good condition. I'd appreciate any info you can gather by looking at these photos, and if you require any additional photos I'd be more than happy to oblige! I know nothing about rugs...so the more info I can get from you, the better! I'd love to know as much about it as I can.

The rug has very vibrant red, dark blue, and a light blue that stands out beautifully. In the design there are birds (peacocks?), rabbits, and antelope (I believe...my nephew says they're llamas...but then again he's 9 years old and I believe Llamas are native to South America).

Photos are linked to my photobucket (public) account. I took photos based on the "4 Basic Photos" link on this site. I wasn't sure about the 1st photo it suggested I take (w/the dots) but I believe the "top" of the rug is at the top of my photo (looks like ends are tied off there?).

note: once you click the link to the photo, if you click the photo it will enlarge.

Hi KBradley!

lol, great story, welcome to the forum, and excellent photographsDancing . just what we like to see.

It is a rug from iran age probably around mid to late 80's but could be as old as 1960's. The stain on the fringe is nominal, could even be a bit of rust from the loom at the weaving factory. If the damage to the edge is isolated to that one small area, it's nothing really... unless it doesn't pass the tug test from deterioration

Does anyone have ballpark amount that the rug should be worth?

Retail price in new condition would probably be in the vicinity of 2000 to 2700. private party would be lower and conditional issues would also need to be factored in too

I agree that this is an Iranian rug made in the early 80s. The style is called "Qum", named for the city in which it was made.

Hey guys - thanks again for the info. I'm researching Qum rugs now, and I'm wondering if my rug is a Silk or a Wool rug? I can't tell, but I'm assuming it is Wool. They mention Silk Qum rugs though, and so I was curious. Also, I wanted to make sure I'm counting the KPSI right (I'm such a noob!). Is it 12x12? What does "ply" refer to?

Hello,

Qum is a very good estimate. It does have the end wrap yellow and brown.

Your rug is wool pile, cotton foundation.

Here is info on yarn ply. It's not uncommon for some people to count each ply as a single knot. You have to identify the weft.

This video covers it a bit:
